Is Stephen Colbert Different?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Comedy, Late Night, Talk Shows, Cable,

Stephen ColbertOn his Wednesday night show, told viewers that, although he is lumped together with other hosts, he is different. He is a newsman. This was said all very tongue-in-cheek of course, but Colbert may not be far from wrong. is a little different from other variety shows, and the program’s host definitely stands out from the pack.

In his quest to find ways to fill up air time, Colbert taped three recently-aired hilarious segments in which he chronicled his quest to hang in the nation’s museum: The Smithsonian Institution. For six weeks, Colbert’s portrait (from season three, this one features four different Stephens in the picture) will hang just outside the Hall of Presidents in the National Portrait Gallery. To be specific, right under the sign for the restrooms. This is, of course, only a temporary arrangement. (An official for the museum said the Institute is going along with the joke, and the portrait will not be a permanent fixture.) Since Colbert’s announcement, several young visitors have flocked to the museum to pose with the portrait - even some who had never been to the National Portrait Gallery before.

The sheer loyalty Colbert commands sets him apart from other hosts, and the attention he receives is no laughing matter. Somehow, I can’t help but think Colbert’s portrait won’t have any trouble finding a permanent home in some prestigious locale.

Hoap is Portrait Artist

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Design, Misc. Tech, Science, Videos,

Sylvain Calinon of LASA (Learning Algorithms and Systems Laboratory,)  has been working with robotics for quite some time. One of the results is the Hoap 3 that can create a portrait and sign it.

“When the robot recognizes a face in its field of view, it first grabs a snapshot of the face and extracts the relevant features and contours characterizing it. The robot then grabs a pen and starts drawing the user’s portrait, starting from the rough contours and adding details iteratively,” Calinon said.

While it a charming thing to watch, somehow it doesn’t have the same appeal as local artists who appreciate onlookers.

Colbert Portrait to Grace Restaurant Wall

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Cable, Cable/Satellite, Internet,

Stephen Colbert A portrait of The Colbert Report‘s Stephen Colbert was recently auctioned on e-Bay for charity. Turns out the highest bidder was Chad Walldorf’s chain of barbecue restaurants—bidding $50,605 for the painting which once hung above the fireplace on the set of Colbert’s show. Kooky lil’ painting, showing Colbert standing in front of a portrait of himself—so when he stands in front of it in reality, it’s Colbert standing in front of Colbert… standing in front of Colbert. Colbert announced Walldorf and his business partners as the winning bidder on Tuesday’s show. The partners, who oversee 17 Sticky Fingers restaurants, plan to put the painting in their Charleston, S.C. restaurant. An homage to Colbert, who calls Charleston his hometown.

“We don’t know much about art, but figured any time you can get two portraits for the price of one, then it must be a great deal,” Walldorf told The Associated Press. Proceeds for the sale will go to Save the Children.
