November shoppers spend 15% more, and Black Friday surges by 26%

Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Hot Deals, Internet,

You've heard the numbers in aggregate for Black Friday weekend, but what about the month of November in general? Or Black Friday itself? Just how does this year stack up against the same period of time last year, especially given the lowered sales expectations and overall retail optimism as of late?

Here's a spoiler: Online retailers don't have anything to worry about so far.

"Despite some analysts' predictions that the flurry of brick-and-mortar retailers opening their doors early for Black Friday would pull dollars from online retail, we still saw a banner day for e-commerce with more than $800 million in spending," said comScore chairman, Gian Fulgoni, in a statement. "With brick-and-mortar retail also reporting strong gains on Black Friday, it's clear that the heavy promotional activity had a positive impact on both channels."

According to comScore's figures, online shopping is up 15 percent between November 1–25, 2011 versus the same time period last year. That's an increase from approximately $11 billion in spending to $12.7 billion, helped out in part by an 18-percent increase for online spending on Thanksgiving Day and a 26-percent increase in online spending on Black Friday itself.

Beyonce becomes Sasha Fierce

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Upcoming Releases, Pop, R&B / Soul,

Beyonce“I have someone else that takes over when it’s time for me to work and when I’m on stage, this alter ego that I’ve created that kind of protects me and who I really am,” explained Beyonce Knowles, singing superstar and movie maven.

Who is this alter ego, this doppelganger who looks like Beyonce but acts provocative? From now on, you can just call Mrs. Jay-Z Sasha Fierce. Her new album “I Am…Sasha Fierce” debuts November 18 and the ad campaign has already begun among a blitz of public relations ops and even a weird MySpace page.

“Sasha Fierce is the fun, more sensual, more aggressive, more outspoken side and more glamorous side that comes out when I’m working and when I’m on the stage,” Knowles explained…or should I just call her Sasha? View the Sasha Fierce MySpace page for your opportunity to win a personal message and gift bag worth $500.

Is all this just about her new album…or is Beyonce really undergoing a name change?

Sarah Palin, Tina Fey

From the word go, comedy has been a huge factor for the election season. From the astonishing 20-plus contenders to the hysterical primary debates, it’s been one heck of a ride to the White House - and it still isn’t over. shocked the world by jumping from unknown politician to media darling, but through the last few weeks the American public has had something solid to look forward to: Tina Fey spoofing her.

The two SNL skits featuring Fey as Palin have already reached legendary proportions, re-played by competing broadcasters and posted all over the Internet so that all might enjoy. “That lady is a media star,” Fey said recently of Palin in an interview with TV Guide. “She is a fascinating person, she’s very likeable. She’s fun to play.” And hilarious to watch.

The Election’s Not Over

American Flag

After months of hard-core coverage, tons of big banner headlines and more primary elections than you can shake a stick at, suddenly the election news is quiet. Now that all the little battles are over (McCain vs. the world, vs. Clinton, etc.), there is only one last war to wage.

And yet…no one seems to care.

The news has slowed almost to a trickle and the television coverage is slim at best. But there’s a whole lot more to do before the country takes to the polls on November 4, 2008. Namely, aren’t there supposed to be some Presidential debates coming up?

Oliver Stone to Put W in George W. Bush

President George W. Bush , director Oliver Stone is going to take on the subject that has created strife, laughs, tears and terror - the presidency of a man named George W. Bush.

At that time (January), Stone said he was going to create “a fair, true portrait” of the man we all call Dubya. It’s now April, and the film is making ready for its start date (the 21st). The script has already been given to Bush biographers. Okay, I haven’t read it. However, according to some reports the script is said to depict Bush as “foul-mouthed,” “obsessed,” and shows a complicated relationship between himself and Bush, Sr.

Oliver Stone to Tell the Tale of George W. Bush

President George W. BushIn the history of the United States of America, no president has become a star of pop culture quite like . In his two terms in the White House, there have been more skits, more jokes, tons of movies and more clips of his press conferences than you can shake a Bill of Rights at. Now, director will create a full length feature film depicting the Presidency that changed our Constitution. Stone has previously created movies about JFK and Nixon, and promises reporters this new movie will tell the true tale of Bush’s time in office.

Currently, the director is in talks with actor (No Country for Old Men) to play the title role. If all goes well and production begins on schedule, the movie will be released in November during the heat and hostility of election time. If this timetable can’t be met, Stone is hopeful he can have the movie in theaters the following January (when the new Pres is being inaugurated).

In his own words, Stone says he will make a movie that is “a fair, true portrait” of our current president. So…it’s going to be a tragic , right?

‘October Road’ Returns to ABC

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Renewals,

October Road, the show that made a brief appearance last March, will be returning to next month.  The show stars as Nick Garrett, a famous author who returns to his home town after 10 years away. (I tell you this because chances are you didn’t watch it either.)  (That 70’s Show) plays Nick’s ex-girlfriend and mother of his possible child.

October will make a one-stint appearance Thursday, Nov. 22nd @ 10pm.  It will then slide into its regular time slot starting Monday, Nov. 26th @ 10pm (presumably after is wrapped up).

I hate to say the series won’t last more than another six episodes—but I’ll go and ahead and do just that.  The last time a show made a one-time Thursday appearance, it quickly disappeared days later.  (If you haven’t guessed, I was referring to Viva Laughlin.)  And has anyone else noticed that October is premiering on Thanksgiving??  My bet’s on four new episodes…tops.
