Video: AT&T on iPhone 3GS pricing and availability
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Cell Phones, Corporate News, Handhelds, Portable Audio / Video, Videos, Wireless / WiFi
If you’re an AT&T customer wanting to get the low-down on the iPhone 3GS launch plans, Seth Bloom of AT&T has put up the video above to help you out. Seth goes into pricing (although he doesn’t explain some of the gross iPhone 3GS pricing discrepancies), and how the $199/299 price points are only for “new and qualifying” customers. He also says that on launch day, June 19, two lines will form at AT&T Stores. One for those who have pre-ordered the device, and another for those who need to make a purchase. Pre-orders get picked up at 7 AM, which regular purchasers will need to wait until the store opens at normal business hours. Last, the current iPhone 3G is now available for $99 for the 8GB model, and the 16GB model is now selling for $149, while supplies last.

ATT iPhone 3G customers pay more for iPhone 3GS
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Cell Phones, Corporate News, Portable Audio / Video, Wireless / WiFi

Amidst all the iPhone 3GS hype, there is some bad news today as well for owners of the current iPhone 3G who may want to upgrade. As it turns out, those $199/299 prices being thrown around aren’t for you. Those are for new customers, and those who are at the end of their contract. If you are a current iPhone 3G owner on AT&T, you’ll have to shell out $399 for a 16GB iPhone 3GS, or $499 for a 32GB model. Ever have your iPhone 3G replaced because it was faulty? You may be in for an even bigger shock. As you can see in the image above, there are two iPhones that AT&T is giving the upgrade status on. The thing is, both phones were purchased on the same day, and are on the same plan (I should know, as it is my account up there.) See how the upgrade dates are different? Straight up ridiculous.
Oh, and if you are just completely not eligible for an upgrade, or want to buy an iPhone 3GS with no contract commitments? The 16GB model will cost you $599, and the 32GB iPhone 3GS will run you a cool $699. I know, it hurts.

iPhone 3GS announced: Launches June 19th, $199 16GB, $299 32GB

As expected, Apple introduced the world to the iPhone 3GS this morning during their WWDC 2009 keynote. It looks the same as the current iPhone 3G, glossy back and all, but is much faster. Heck, the S in 3GS stands for “speed” even. We are talking about messaging 2.1x faster, SimCity bring 2.4x faster, viewing an Excel file being 3.6x faster, and loading NY Times being 2.9x faster. Nice!
7.2Mbps HSDPA is now supported in the iPhone 3GS, which means cell connectivity will be twice as fast as well. Aside from speed, you also now have a 3 megapixel camera built-in, which supports autofocus by tapping on an area, as well as auto white balance and auto macro shots. The iPhone 3GS also supports video, which will record at 30fps VGA, and is editable right on the iPhone 3GS. After editing, you can share directly to YouTube, MobileMe, email, or even MMS. You also get a built-in magnetometer compass, Nike+ support, and a very nice voice control feature that will dial people, as well as allow you to control music playback just by talking to the phone.
The iPhone 3GS goes on sale on June 19th, and can be pre-ordered now. It will cost $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for 32GB. These prices only apply to new and end-of-contract customers. If you are a current iPhone 3G customer, you may have to pay up to $599 for the 16GB model, and $699 for the 32GB. Ouch.

Apple will announce the iPhone Video at WWDC 2009 this coming Monday. That won’t be a surprise though, as many are expecting it, Walt Mossberg said it, and Apple needs to counteract the Palm Pre launch.
What you don’t know, though, is that Apple will likely make the iPhone Video available the same day. Yes, you will be able to pick up the next version of the iPhone on Monday, if you get to an Apple Store before they sell out.

Apple selling iPhone 3G online
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Cell Phones, Handhelds

If you have yet to purchase an iPhone 3G, you now have another way of buying it, as Apple is now offering direct online purchase of the phone. Something that hasn’t been seen since the original iPhone, online purchasing is back in effect on the Apple website. AT&T has actually been selling the iPhone 3G on their site for about five months now. If you are a new subscriber, you activate service online and the phone is sent to you. Current AT&T customer will have to go and pick up the iPhone 3G at an Apple Store.
This is obviously just another way that Apple is trying to clear out all that iPhone 3G inventory in preparation of the next model.

iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 now available
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Apple, Cell Phones, Handhelds, Software

Hey look at this, after just a little more than a week, we’ve another build of the iPhone 3.0 beta. Apple has released iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 (build 7A312g), which is now available for download to iPhone developers. Of course, iPhone SDK 3.0 beta 4 (build 9M2735) is also available. In order to get iPhone 3.0 beta 4 working, you need to be running the newly released iTunes 8.2 Pre-release (b10).
Of interest here is that the SDK is just one build newer than the last one, and the fact that we are getting close to weekly beta releases. This is an obvious sign that Apple is in the finalization stages of the iPhone 3.0 OS, which lines right up with the June release of the platform.
