Man Uses YouTube to Help Deliver Baby

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Google, Internet,

BabyA man in Cornwall, UK, actually used YouTube to help him deliver the couple’s fourth baby. Marc Stephens, a 28 year-old engineer, went online at about 10:30 p.m. when his wife figured it was “time.” With a history of delivering quickly, Jo’s husband apparently figured going online would be faster than taking her to the hospital when a midwife couldn’t make it. He Googled “childbirth” and came up with a couple of clips on YouTube. Sometime later, a healthy Gabriel came forth. Fortunately, he did take her to the hospital after the event. Both are doing famously, thank you very much.

Yahoo to Close GeoCities

Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Google, Internet,

Geocities header

If your first site was on GeoCities, then let’s have a moment of silence as Yahoo has decided to retire the free service by the end of the year and is accepting no new accounts. Existing accounts still have access, but they would rather you upgrade to their paid Web Hosting service with a discount of 50%. GeoCities was bought in 1999 for $287 billion, but ComScore reports that traffic has fallen about 24% in the past year. Contact the help center if you want to close your account or have questions.

Knot Website Created for Grey’s Anatomy Wedding

Grey's Anatomy's Meredith and Derek

Despite her recent collapse onto the hospital room floor, Meredith Grey’s wedding organizer has found some time to get work done online. Like many of the betrothed couples out there, Mer and Der now have a site devoted to their nuptials on The Knot.

“I know, I know. I secretly never thought it would happen either. But it’s real. There’s a ring (I’ve seen it, though I’m pretty sure Mer still isn’t wearing it.) There are dresses (a lot of dresses, actually. I’ve called every bridal shop in town. Mer put me in charge, I think cause she feels bad that I’m all cancery or something – but who cares. I get to plan the wedding. LOVING IT!) There’s a bride (who will look glorious DESPITE her dreary, dark cloud of wedding hatred) and there’s a groom (who, thank goodness, won’t be sporting his Grizzly Adams beard to the ceremony!),” Izzie Stevens writes on the intro page.

Microsoft to Discontinue Encarta

Encarta logoThose of us who remember the happiness of finding Encarta included in our early PC purchase are somewhat saddened by the announcement that it will soon no longer be available. The software will cease after June and most sites will shut down by October 2009. Japan will cut theirs off in December. Microsoft commented, “People today seek and consume information in considerably different ways than in years past.”

We know they mean Wikipedia, yet the concept of one disc replacing an entire set of encyclopedias was certainly high tech at the time. And the better images used by Encarta will definitely be missed.
