We want some! We still adore our eneloop batteries that we haven’t had to charge in months, even though we use them almost daily, but we really admire the ingenuity of the ReUSaBle Batteries. When their juice starts to drain, simply plug them into any USB port or 250mA Ni-MH charger. An LED will let you know the status of the charge. A pair of the 2 x AA size batteries (1.2V at 1450mAh) will cost you $19.15, well worth the amount considering that they will eventually save you money and the planet.

DIY SUNN Electric/Solar Car Kit

SUNN Car Art Haines has developed the SUNN electric/solar car that can hit a top speed of 35 mph. You won’t be able to race down the highway, but with the customized kit you will be able to get where you need to go and help save the planet. It comes with windshield wiper, disc brakes, seat belts, turn signals and lights for $4,500.00 in your choice of color. You add the batteries and/or solar panel. The company claims that it will only take about 80 to 120 human-hours to put it together. Initiated as a high school project, they are also working on two pickup trucks.

In this election year, we find more patriotic gadgets than we will ever actually need. The Musical Statue of Liberty is no exception, but at least this one is non-partisan. Draped in the American flag and made of hand-painted vinyl, the mini-statue not only looks tacky, but press her button and her torch keeps time to the thrilling tune of “New York, New York.” Standing all of 10-inches, she requires 2 AA batteries (not included) and carries a MSRP of $11.98.

Rug Finds Your Way at Night

Wouldn’t it be nice to get up at night for a bathroom jaunt and not worry about tripping over something in the dark? Engineering students Leona Dean and Zoe Robson from London South Bank University have created the Footlume, an electroluminescent rug. Using rechargeable batteries, its light is controlled by a person’s weight. Dean says that it can also “provide ambient mood lighting or flash in time to music as a talking point at a party.”

The prototype will be on display at the Daily Mail Ideal Home Show in London this month. The thought occurs to us that if it responds to humans, it will do the same with nocturnal pets and the idea may backfire if they decide to play “chase the light” as our cat does.
