Bart Simpson #57: Sergio Aragones & Evan Dorkin

Bart Simpson 57

Can you really go wrong with an issue of Bart Simpson that features work by Sergio Aragones and Evan Dorkin?

I don't need to know the contents or what the stories are about or any of the pertinent details.

All I know is that those guys are in it, along with some of the usual Bongo creators, and that makes it well worth my $2.99.

It’s on sale this week, and I’ll be rushing to the LCS to get my copy. I suggest you do the same.

The Simpsons try to spoil Lost

NOTE: This is not an actual reveal of how the Lost finale ended last night.

Turns out Donald Trump wasn’t the only TV personality vying for our attention Sunday evening.

In hopes of keeping people tuned in for their show’s finale, the folks behind The Simpsons managed to work in a a little “spoiler” during the intro for their show. Their amusing reference to the 4.5-hour long extravaganza can be seen written on the board in the image above.

This is, of course, not the first time Bart Simpson has written about another program in chalk. Back in April, the FOX series wrote words of “support” to their colleagues at South Park.

Simpsons show support for South Park

If you caught the opening of on Sunday night, you saw the network show throw a little love toward their animated cable channel brethren - courtesy of Bart Simpson’s running opening gag.

On the ever-changing school chalkboard, Bart delivered a clear message to the South Park creators, who received last week following a controversial episode of the series.

The message from ? “South Park - We’d stand beside you if we weren’t so scared.” Classic.

Bart Simpson #50: Sergio Aragonés!

Posted by Tom Mason Categories: Reviews, Independent,

BartLet’s get this out of the way right up front: I have a bias when it comes to Sergio Aragonés. I grew up reading his Marginals in MAD Magazine and later worked for a company that published his work (two graphic albums and The Mighty Magnor mini-series with Mark Evanier). During that time, I not only met him, but he once dropped by the office on a day that coincidentally was my birthday and, in the time it might take me to read an email, he drew in ink (no penciling) a breathtaking 9x12 illustration of multi-character cartoon goodness as a gift. I still have it, framed on my office wall.

So my bias goes well beyond fancrush. I was saddened that MAD Magazine went quarterly because it meant 8 fewer paychecks per year for all those freelancers associated with the magazine, including Sergio. But I knew that anyone who draws as fast and funny as he does would find another outlet for his work, and I was delighted - and surprised - to discover that it would be The Simpsons.

He’s joined Bongo Comics, and they’ve made a big deal out of his debut on Simpsons Comics Presents Bart Simpson #50, subtitled “Mad About Sergio.” Sergio writes, pencils and inks two complete stories. The first is “The Simpson Project,” about what happens when Bart and Milhouse’s homemade rocketship triggers a domino effect of international nuttiness. And the second is “Big Top Flop” where Bart and his friends sneak away from Cirque Du Lune (”the elegant art of mime and the subtle fantasy of Asian contortionists”) and try to sneak into a “real” circus. There are also two shorter gag pieces by Sergio.

The 44-cent stamps will be unveiled on April 9th. A sale date will be announced at that time.

The Simpsons was recently renewed for its 21st and 22nd seasons.

Bart Simpson: Scientology Recruiter?

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Television, Legal Issues,

Tonight, Bart Simpson is the subject of controversy…and it was for something he actually didn’t do.

, the woman behind the iconic cartoon character, recently used her talents for something not exactly sanctioned by FOX. In the clip above, the long-time Scientologist lent her voice - and Bart’s - in an automated call used to promote a Scientology event.

“This is not authorized by us,” Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told the Hollywood Reporter. “ does not, and never has, endorsed any religion, philosophy or system of beliefs any more profound than Butterfinger bars.”

It’s not known what actions, if any, the network may take against Cartwright or the organization at this time.

Box Office Breakdown:  It’s Super To Be Bad

Superbad

The Judd Apatow train is bound to hit a roadblock at some point—but for the time being, it’s full steam ahead.  Superbad opened impressively with over $30 million this weekend making it the third Apatow-related project in a row to accomplish this feat (the others being Talledega Nights and Knocked Up).  This is, of course, not taking into consideration the uber-sleeper hit The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Meanwhile, there was nothing super about Nicole Kidman’s latest outing.  The Invasion, the latest version The Body Snatchers, scared up a dismal $5.9 million (and that’s despite Daniel Craig’s hunky presence).  But I predict a much stronger outing for these two later this year with The Golden Compass.

Box Office Breakdown:  Audiences Not Yet Tuckered Out

Rush Hour 3

Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third, Pirates, Ocean’s, Bourne and now Rush Hour 3.  All six three-quels premiered directly at the top of the heap this summer.

Unfortunately, a six-year gap between the second and third Rush installments may have led to what some would consider slightly disappointing receipts.  On any other occasion, a $50 weekend would be something to brag about.  But considering it pales to the $67.4 million brought in by the 2001 predecessor, it’s only worth a pat on the back.

But really, the Disappointment of the Week honor should really fall on Cuba Gooding Jr.  When you’re accepting rejected scripts from the man who played Norbit, you have to wonder where it all went wrong (two words: Chill Factor).  Sadly, Daddy Day Camp was originally slated to be a straight-to-video release but somehow tested well enough to be released in theaters.  Who knows?  Maybe Gooding can pull a Halle and go straight-from-Oscar-to-Razzie.
