AT&T slashes price of first-gen iPad 3G by $200-$300

iPad 3G AT&T discount

It's the hardest decision an Apple fan can make: Pick up a discounted iPad or splurge for its slightly more expensive successor, the iPad 2. And it's not like Apple's made the dilemma any easier: The company discounted its original iPad models by a cool $100 upon the announcement of the iPad 2, adding an even greater incentive for those looking to score a tablet on the cheap.

And now, that decision just got a whole lot harder.

Not content to let Apple be the only tease on the block, AT&T has since followed up with a price discount of its very own. Customers looking to purchase a first-generation iPad can now do so via the mobile carrier, which will slap an extra $100 discount on top of Apple's.

The $200 reduction, in total, drops the final price of the original iPad (3G) to $429 and $529 for the 16GB and 32GB versions respectively. In addition, AT&T has slashed the price of the 64-gigabyte version of the iPad 3G to $529, a $300 savings beyond its original purchase price, which you can pick that up via AT&T's official website.

AT&T warns users they’ll be charged if the continue unauthorized tethering

att tetherting

AT&T confirmed Friday that it has contacted a small number of its smartphone users and ordered them to stop tethering their phones without paying for AT&T's tethering service or the carrier will automatically add tethering to their monthly bills.

"We are sending emails, letter and text messages to a small number of smartphone customers who use their devices for tethering but aren't on the required tethering plan. Our goal is fairness for all of our customers," an AT&T spokesman said in an email.

The alerts give users the option to stop tethering and continue on their current plan, call AT&T and add tethering to their plan, or risk having AT&T automatically bump them to a tethering plan.

AT&T said the warnings impact a "small percentage of our smartphone customer base."

According to Ars Technica, users have until March 27 to make their choices, after which the automatic tethering plans will go into effect.

AT&T smartphone users have the choice of 200MB for $15 per month or 2GB for $25 per month. A DataPro plan adds 2GB for $20 extra per month for a total of 4GB for $45 per month.

AT&T iPhone download speeds beat Verizon

Verizon iPhone slow

When it comes to data speeds, one research group claims that the AT&T iPhone 4 is a nosehair faster than Verizon's iPhone.

Downloading data with the AT&T iPhone, which runs on a 3G HSPDA network, is twice as fast as downloads with the Verizon iPhone, which runs on EVDO, according to mobile research firm Metrico Wireless. But the average load time for an "average Web page" is the same on both devices.

When the iPhone user is on the move, AT&T's iPhone completed "around 10 percent more data download sessions than the Verizon iPhone. The opposite was true when the iPhone was stationary," Metrico found.

"There are many factors that determine Web performance. Speed isn't the only one," a Metrico spokeswoman said. "There's also OS trends, rendering time, latency on the network, etc. This report's findings are based on a standardized average Web page. Larger Web pages may offer different results."

motorola atrix 4g

The Atrix 4G, which was launched at CES, will be priced at $199.99 for AT&T customers who sign a new two-year agreement. The Atrix 4G is expected to ship on March 6, the company said, while pre-orders begin on February 13th.

AT&T also said that it would offer a $499 bundle for both the Atrix tablet and the associated laptop dock, which will require the user to sign up for a two-year service contract, a Data Pro smartphone data plan, and and the tethering add-on fee, but receive a $100 rebate on top of that. That works out to a total of $45 per month for 4 GBs of data, according a company spokeswoman; customers would pay $25 for the Data Pro smartphone plan and $20 for the tethering add-on.

Otherwise, the user will have to pay $499 for the laptop dock himself.
