Apple Spill Detection Waterproofs Your MacBook Warranty

Posted by Patrick Phelps Categories: Apple, PC / Laptop

MacBook Liquid Submersion Detection

Spill your morning coffee on your MacBook and then take it in for covered warranty service? Those days are ending; water damage is obviously a violation of the AppleCare warranty, and the new MacBook and computers, introduced last week, include what cellphones have had for years: Liquid Submersion Indicators, which alert technicians to water damage. Located under the keyboard and near the trackpad, the sensors change color when exposed to a liquid. Once these sensors are activated, there is no way to undo the process, so you’re just gonna have to fess up next time, so please - no more Shirley Temples near the hardware, okay?

Will apple still fix the computer though if you have the apple care protection thing?

No. Both the Apple Limited Warranty, and the AppleCare Protection Plan, do NOT cover liquid spill or accidental drop damage.

All repair costs on any spill-damaged unit, even one under AppleCare, are the responsibility of the user.

If the spill affects the Main Logic Board, you can expect to pay a flat “Tier” repair rate, the fee for which is comparable to a new portable computer.

Simply refrain from having beverages nearby your computer, and all will be well.

In the instances where a user KNOWS that they will spill on it *sometime* within their computer’s life (or drop it frequently, or beat the crap out of it, etc), I recommend that these “heavy use” users save the $200 they would spend on AppleCare, and instead put it in a jar towards their next new laptop, after they spill/drop/crack/break their existing one.

Do you expect your car’s warranty to cover accidentally driving into a lake, or off a cliff? Probably not. Computer manufacturers are no different than any other manufacturers. The responsibility still lies in the maturity and wisdom of the computer’s user.
