Prince Gives Planet Earth to UK Fans
Prince has given away about 3 million copies of his new album “Planet Earth,” which debuts July 24, in the UK newspaper Mail on Sunday. He also plans to distribute some at one of his London concerts beginning next month. When asked why he made the decision, he replied, “It’s direct marketing and I don’t have to be in the speculation business of the record industry which is going through a lot of tumultuous times right now.”
Many retailers are freaking out at his decision, but others, such as HMV, sold the paper at their own store, while The News of the World (a competitor of Mail on Sunday) offered to give away “Purple Rain” in a mobile phone text contest. You just can’t put a price on that kind of PR. Good show, Prince!
