iOS 6 to feature new Apple-powered Maps, eliminating Google

iOS 6 Maps

Google Maps has been a mainstay on in iOS since the birth of the original iPhone back in 2007. For us, the Maps app is one of our most used apps on the device, and we'd bet that this is the same for many others. However, Apple need Google Maps anymore. The company has purchased multiple mapping companies in the past couple of years, including C3 Technologies, Poly9, and Placebase. We haven't really seen the fruits of these acquisitions yet, but that may all be changing with iOS 6.

9to5Mac has received word that Apple is set to dump Google out of the Maps app for good, as it's ready to switch to a "much cleaner, faster, and more reliable" in-house solution. The report goes on to say that one of the big features of the Apple-built Maps app will be a new 3D mode powered by the 3D mapping prowess of C3.

Now, none of us have actually seen any of this, but it makes perfect sense. As the battle between Apple and Google in the mobile space rages on with iOS and Android duking it out, we'd think that Apple would rather not rely on its toughest competitor to provide and support one of the most essential features that iOS has to offer.

WWDC is right around the corner, and that's where we should end up learning more about iOS 6.
