Meryl Streep Blasts Walt Disney as “Gender Bigot”

Meryl Streep has blasted Walt Disney for being a "gender bigot."
The August: Osage County star hit out at the business magnate while speaking at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association gaga in New York City on Tuesday, where she was invited to honor Emma Thompson for her portrait of Mary Poppins' creator P.L. Travers in Saving Mr Banks.
"Not only is she not irascible, she's practically a saint. There's something so consoling about that old trope, but Emma makes you want to kill yourself, because she's a beautiful artist, she's a writer, she's a thinker, she's a living, acting conscience," Streep said of Thompson.
However, the 64-year-old actress used her nine-minute speech to throw in some subtle digs at Walt Disney, whom she branded a "hideous anti-Semite." According to Variety, Streep said, "Some of his associates reported that Walt Disney didn't really like women," before quoting animator Ward Kimball as saying, "He didn't trust women or cats."

Chrisopher Nolan to Produce Wally Pfister’s Directorial Debut

Chrisopher Nolan will executive produce Wally Pfister's directorial debut.
The Dark Knight Rises director and his producing partner Emma Thompson have confirmed they will be working on the Oscar-winning cinematographer's first film as director, an unnamed thriller. Alcon Entertainment will fund the project. Christopher and Emma had previously joined forces with Alcon for their 2002 thriller Insomnia.
"Chris and Emma, with whom we worked so closely on Insomnia, are supremely talented, as filmmakers, as collaborators, as storytellers, in all ways large and small, and we are delighted to be in business with them again," commented producers Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.

Jim Sturgess Set for Maleficent

Jim Sturgess wants to appear in Maleficent. The One Day actor is reportedly keen to take on the role of Diaval - a love interest for the titular villainous fairy, who will be played by Angelina Jolie - in Disney's forthcoming live action reimagining of the Sleeping Beauty tale.
"Diaval is an Irish man with black hair, dark eyes and a slight Irish accent. When he's first seen in the movie, he's not a human, but a bird. Angie's character, Maleficent, turns him into a man. Then they become lovers," an insider told Life&Style.
However, Jim faces competition for the role from another star. "Gael Garcia Bernal has shown interest, too," the source added. Jude Law is also being lined up for a role in the film. Bosses are said to be keen for the British actor to play half-human half-fairy Stefan, the father of Aurora, who is also known as Sleeping Beauty. "The role has been offered to Jude," a source said.
Elle Fanning has previously been linked to the role of Aurora, while Patrick Stewart is rumored to have been approached to play King Henry and both Judi Dench and Emma Thompson for Flittle. Shooting is slated to start in June.

Cinema Scene: Newsies Heading to Broadway, August: Osage County Heading to Theaters

-Oscar winners Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep may team up for August: Osage County, a big screen version of a Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Playwright Tracy Letts would adapt his own story for the Weinsten production.
-Meanwhile, a Broadway version of Newsies, a 1992 Disney musical starring Christian Bale, is being written by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast), Harvey Fierstein and Jack Feldman.
-Speaking of musicals, the cast of The Sound of Music will reunite later this month for the first time in 45 years. Christopher Plummer, Julie Andrews and the kids will all appear October 29 on Oprah.
-Brenda Chapman has just been named the first female director in Pixar history. Brave, a movie she will also write, will be released in June 2012. Reese Witherspoon, Emma Thompson, and Julie Walters will all voice characters in the project.
Box Office Breakdown: The American Defeats Machete

Although it lacked Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan and Robert De Niro, The American did have two things Machete didn’t: George Clooney and a box office win.
Despite only grossing $13.2 million over the weekend ($16.3 million since Wednesday), the Focus Features entry hit its target. The movie - which was produced for approximately $20 million - managed to top the Robert Rodriguez-actioner by less than $2 million. The American also became Clooney’s best opener - outside of any Brad Pitt-related project - since The Perfect Storm in 2000.
Machete, based on a trailer included in the film Grindhouse, came very close to matching the earlier movie. The Danny Trejo starrer debuted to a modest $11.4 million—about $200,000 short of Grindhouse‘s premiere in 2007.

Box Office Breakdown: Takers Takes the (Close) Win

Although early reports had The Last Exorcism in first place this weekend, the final numbers told a different story. When the dust finally settled on Monday, Lionsgate’s Takers had squeaked out a slim lead. (Less than $200,000 separated the two films.)
Exorcism, though, did not walk away a loser. The movie “documenting” a priest’s final exorcism earned just over $20 million—and it only cost $1.8 million to produce. The PG-13 flick also surpassed The Unborn‘s 2009 debut ($19.8 million), though it did fall short of The Exorcism of Emily Rose. (That 2005 release opened to $30 million.)

Maybe a quick trip to Cougar Town is something Jennifer Aniston could use right now.
Days after blurting out the R-word on television, Aniston is dealing with another ding in her career: the box office disappointment. The Switch, co-starring Jason Bateman, produced only $8.4 million over the past three days while narrowly escaping eighth place. The good news? The movie raised slightly more than Jen’s Love Happens did back in September. The bad news? The comedy earned about $4 million less than Jennifer Lopez’s baby movie, The Back-Up Plan, did in April.
