Casting Corner: Michael Douglas, Katherine Heigl, Sam Rockwell and More

Michael DouglasKatherine Heigl

Here’s a quick look at some of the casting announcements made recently:

Michael Douglas: Douglas - who hasn’t been in a hit in quite some time - has had his name attached to two different projects in the past few weeks. For Solitary Man, the Oscar-winner will return to a subject he is quite familiar with: infidelity. Michael is set to play a car magnate whose life is affected by business and marital problems. Production on Solitary begins in November. Meanwhile, Douglas is also planning to reteam with his Traffic director (Steven Soderbergh) for a biopic on Liberace. Michael will tackle the role of the flamboyant character while Matt Damon is in discussions to play Scott Thorson, a man who sued the pianist for palimony.

Sam Rockwell: The Snow Angels actor will soon be hitting the court for The Winning Season, a basketball comedy. Rockwell will play a washed-up former coach who is given the opportunity to lead a girl’s high school basketball team. Emma Roberts co-stars as one of the athletes (I didn’t realize she was even tall enough) while Rob Corddry has been cast as the principal. Sam can next be seen in Choke, due out September 26.

Katherine Heigl: The Emmy-winner has just lined up another project outside of Seattle Grace. Heigl will next work on Drawn Together, a project for Fox 2000. The “action-comedy” will focus on an electronics designer who believes he has met the woman of his dreams. Of course, she winds up being different than what she seemed. (Don’t they all?) Together will also be produced by Katherine and her mother, Nancy.

Nicole Kidman: For The Eighth Wonder, the new mom will be doing her best Indiana Jones for this 20th Century Fox adventure. In this movie, an archeological discovery will kick off “a globe-spanning race.” No start date has yet been announced for the film. Until then, Kidman can be seen sticking to one continent when Australia debuts on November 26.

Jude Law:  It looks like Sherlock may now have his Watson. Jude Law - who just helped complete Heath Ledger’s role in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus - is in talks to star alongside Robert Downey Jr. in Guy Ritchie’s version of Sherlock Holmes. The film, which begins rolling next month, will compete with another Holmes project being produced by Judd Apatow. In that version, Sacha Baron Cohen will play the famous literary detective while Will Ferrell will play his sidekick.

Keira Knightley:  For her next movie, the Atonement actress will once again be treading into romantic drama territory. Fortunately for her, this movie should not require the use of a corset. In Last Night, Knightley will play a married woman who runs into a former lover. (I can only imagine what happens from there.) The film - which also stars Eva Mendes and Sam Worthington - starts production this October.
