Microsoft Windows Vista Disappointments

Windows Vista DisappointmentsOkay, so I installed the Windows Vista Beta 1 software last night, and all I can say is that I am thoroughly unimpressed. Allow me to tell you why. Remember a few years back when Microsoft was touting all of the amazing things that Longhorn would do, both visually and under the hood? Well, those day are now long gone. I mean, yeah, Microsoft has put in some visual bells and whistles - but nothing like they were touting a few years ago at WinHEC. Do we really need to wait until Blackcomb to ship in the 2011-2015 range before we can get an OS as visually-appealing and stable as OS X?

It took me forever to just get Vista to recognize that it was on a network and get it connected to the Internet. Also, after installing I needed to re-load a few DLL’s in order to get a few things running. Now, I realize that this is beta software, so take all of this with a grain of salt. I am sure this won’t be the case once the OS goes gold, I just really would have liked to have seen some of the stuff Microsoft was making a big deal about. I am talking about the WinFS, Avalon, Indigo powered behemoth that was supposed to usher in the next generation of computing. At this point, Vista really does just seem like a skinned up version of Windows XP with some new animations on a clunky GUI. Yeah, Aero is very unimpressive as well. I guess I will now digress.

Are you stupid? It’s a BETA.

I think its a little unfair to judge Vista at this point. Microsoft have traditionally released ‘Beta 1’s that look near identical to the previous version of Windows, with just a few ugly changes that dont add up to much. Beta 1’s typically are there to test under-the-hood changes to the OS but with Vista, it’s (apparently) far from feature complete so thats not even accurate this time.

Yes, Beta 1 is rubbish compared to a finely honed, spit-shined OS X but I dont think anyone should expect anything else. Personally i’ll be reserving my judgment until all the features are announced and we’ve seen what the final UI will be like.

go OSX!!! Turn away from the Dark Side of Micro$oft and join the light of Apple.

This is DEFINITELY not a new skin for XP. Read up on Windows Presentation Foundation (formerly Avalon)—its capabilities for displaying new visual interfaces are OUTSTANDING.

Consider the difference between Windows XP applications (using GDI) and DirectX games. Games are much faster, yes? That’s because they don’t use 15 year old GDI technology to paint to the screen.

With WPF/Avalon, MANY kick ass applications will come out on Windows, truly driving Windows into a new generation. True, they are sort of following Apple’s lead on this, but still, the MAJOR change is good for all PC users, and the new PC experience will rock.

Besides, it’s still Beta. Remember, apps need to be written specifically to the new WPF APIs, and considering it’s still very new and there aren’t any Avalon designers out there…

Here’s another thing to consider: XAML. Picture your entire desktop with enough flexibility to behave like a Shockwave Flash experience. That could be cool, no?

You are stupid to expect a full featured OS from a beta. But then again, Microsoft has not innovated for a long time, so I’m sticking with my OSX even when this bloatware comes out.

If you want OSX get OSX, but don’t come crawling back complaining that it has closed hardware and doesn’t support hardly any games.

The best Personal Computer System?  MAC OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

Windows Vista?  Suck!!!

Because of semi-reviews like yours should give microsoft all the more reason to keep betas in house until beta 2 or RC1. Its a beta…..not done…..work in progress. As for looks? Do yourself a favor and go look at pix of Windows XP beta…hmmm weird…looks like ME does it not? Did it look like ME in the end?

OK everyone agrees Tiger rules.  Lets talk about Vista.  I couldn’t get it to recognize my RAID card and thus couldn’t load it.  So to me thats -1…

I have downloaded the Vista but the serial key which starts from TCP8W doesnt work whenever i put that key in and press next the Loader gives me an error of encountering a problem.
So if n e 1 know how to install this OS mail me.
thanx

Message for Brook.  If you want to play games but a PS3 at Christmas, not Vista or OSX.  OSX is so far ahead it is ridiculous.  By the time MS actually releases Vista Apple will have built 10.5 (Leopard) and it will run on both Power PC processors and Intel Chips, effectively putting them about 32 months ahead of microsoft in GUI terms.  If I were Microsoft I’d be worried about the implications of asking users to buy Vista and upgrade their machine and then give them a souped up version of XP which hackers will crack in a couple of weeks.  According to experts businesses will have to replace 90% of their machines in order to run Vista.  Awesome thinking from the worlds worst corporation.

“According to experts businesses will have to replace 90% of their machines in order to run Vista.”

Mind posting where you got these figures from?

“effectively putting them about 32 months ahead of microsoft in GUI terms.”

OK, so Apple is and will be ahead of Windows in GUI terms. What about in developer support? Development platforms and IDEs? Integration with enterprise software like SQL and Exchange? Scalable directory services like AD? You know, the stuff that actually makes a business run smoothly.

I’m sure no one will care though since they can have a nice GUI with OS X.

Vista will run fine on a modern day PC. The most you will miss out on is the hardware accelerated interface if you don’t have a compliant display device, in which case Windows will default to a more basic GUI similar to Windows 2000/2003. But your PC will run just fine. You might need a bit more RAM but 512MB of RAM is pocket change unless you are buying Corsair XMS RAM or something of that nature.

Last I recall, even Mac-heads were stating in their reviews that if you want to get any real work done on a Mac Mini, you are going to have to buy it with at least 512MB of RAM otherwise the machine is too sluggish. Sounds an awful lot like Vista. But that’s OK. Mac is always the exception to the rule, no?

Don’t you think it’s time to be enlightened?

You are completely correct. It just looks like a reskinned XP.

Everyone who says its not just reskinned but it has a totally new skinned technology help prove the point, its not about what skinning technology is available, its about the fact that that’s all it is. Skins.

Also, winfs is stupid, Mac OS X AND LINUX already have multiple blazing file systems to choose from.  Plus, for all you skin-ability losers, MAC OS X looks good and actually has the ability to use plug-ins to create any extension to the desktop you could think of and LINUX is re-skinnable from the ground up with similar plug-in technology like superkaramba at www.superkaramba.com .

Check out screenshots of real modern desktops like MAC and LINUX (KDE) and you’ll see what I mean. Windows is a dying enterprise, move along and you’ll be glad you did.

Enjoy, i hope i’m enlightening some people.

A beta version has its functionallity completed. And this has been true with all winows versions. You could said it is unfair to make judgments if this was an alpha version.Windows fans you should be really scared because this is piece of crap your going to get next year. This is very sad.

Boy am I glad im not a windows fan. hell, i agree with vlad blanton on this one, I moved away from windows a year ago with a dual boot linux + windows.  I RARELY ever touch windows, and when I do, it is to play video games like HL2, Counter-Strike, or GTA: San Andreas. Soon enough I wont even windows at all, more and more games are coming out for linux too!  I currently have Doom3 ,Quake4, Soldier of Fortune2 and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory running on linux beautifully!

Here is a a discussion and review of SUSE linux 10.0 [http://www.opensuse.org]:

This is interesting, I didn’t expect much linux discussion here, but I guess time are changing. Viva la change!
