Conan O’Brien Congratulated by NBC for Emmy Nods

Conan O’Brien’s surprise Emmy nominations this morning for his work on The Tonight Show prompted NBC to issue a

unexpected statement about their former employee.

The network, which did not see a Jay Leno mention, wrote: “We congratulate Conan and all our nominees on their creative accomplishments and their deserved nominations.”

Conan - who saw his old program receive four noms including one for Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series - also delivered his own comment via Twitter. “Congrats to my staff on 4 Emmy nominations. This bodes well for the future of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien,” he wrote.

2010 Primetime Emmy Nominations

The road to the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards officially kicked off early this morning. Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara (who received a nod) and Community‘s Joel McHale (who didn’t) were the ones who had the honor of reading this year’s list of nominees.

Although Mad Men - with 17 nominations - once again topped off all dramas, 30 Rock did

lead the comedies. Glee did. The freshman FOX series raked in a total of 19 noms, only a handful short of the overall leader. (HBO’s miniseries, The Pacific, received 24 mentions.) 30 Rock did receive 15 nominations, though, while Modern Family followed closely behind with 14.

The August 29 ceremony - which NBC will air live on both the East and West coasts - will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon. You can see a partial list of nominees after the jump.

Conan O’Brien Talks About Super Mario Resemblance

• I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! (NBC, 8pm):  Series premiere. “In the opener, 10 celebrities are dropped into the heart of the jungle to begin competing in various challenges that test their survival skills.” The first victim? Sanjaya Malakar‘s hair.
• Jon & Kate Plus Eight (TLC, 9pm):  “The kids team up with professional baker Duff Goldman (Ace of Cakes) to create a special surprise for Kate on her birthday.” Kate, having been left all alone, will be forced to stuff her own pinatas.
• Unwrapped (Food, 9pm):  “Fried foods are featured. Included: Ian’s organic chicken nuggets.” As if an organic version would make them less wrong.
• The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien (NBC, 11:30pm): The return of Andy Richter? Say no more!
