ABC Takes Ratings Lead Sunday, Monday Nights

This weekend’s ABC premieres made it clear audiences prefer their dramas soapy on Sunday nights.

  • Although (19.3 million viewers, 7.4/17 share in 18-49 demo) and (13.3 million, 5.1/13) were both down from last year’s premieres (23% and 15% respectively), both shows earned their best numbers since Nov. 26th.
  • (13.5 million, 3.4/8) and (11.4 million, 2.7/7) did improve upon last week’s premieres, though Shark’s numbers were lower compared to last year’s time slot holder ().
  • (8.4 million, 4.2/11), (7.2 million, 3.5/9) and (7.9 million, 4.2/10) all underperformed their numbers from last Sunday.

The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Coverage

Emmy AwardsThe 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast.  Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)?  Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)?  Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?

What a difference a year makes.  Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now).  Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best ComedyLast year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien.  This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest.  Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama.  This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).

I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight.  We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…

Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!

Danny Glover Joins Brothers & Sisters

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC,

Danny GloverDanny Glover will be joining the cast of Brothers & Sisters this fall, playing Nora’s (Sally Field) love interest. No word on how many episodes he’ll appear, but it is a recurring role, so expect him around for a few at least. I’m excited to see Glover, but wonder how his relationship with Field’s character will play out. I was slightly disappointed by her coupling with Peter Coyote last season—it just seemed to fall flat. Of course, whenever I see Glover, I immediately think of Lethal Weapon. Case in point, we watched the movie Shooter the other night and what’s the first thing my husband and I see when Danny Glover is on screen? “I’m gettin’ too old for this sh*t.” Without fail—everytime he’s in a movie, that’s what comes to mind. So, I’ve got to get over that when he’s on Brothers & Sisters! Glover last appeared on the small screen in 2005 on ER, playing Mekhi Phifer’s father.

Rob Lowe Pegs Bird While Golfing

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Gossip,

Rob Lowe I just had to comment on this Rob Lowe news because just a couple of days ago I was noting how this man never ages. I’ve been catching up on some DVR recordings of Brothers & Sisters and noted how great Lowe looks. I was a fan back in the St. Elmo’s Fire days, and not much has changed since. I dare you to find anyone better—male or female—that looks better than Rob Lowe on High Def! He’s certainly tapped into the fountain of youth, and he is magnificent on Brothers & Sisters. But anyway, enough about his smoldering good looks. Sigh… seems he’s got a killer golf game too. He was participating in a celebrity golf tournament in Iowa when he hit a passing bird during a shot on the fourth hole. He pegged the goldfinch and dropped the ball within 50 yards of the green. Of course, Lowe quipped, “That’s my birdie. That’s unbelievable. Who comes here and kills the state bird? Only me.” Gotta love him. Even if he is a bird killer.

‘Brothers & Sisters’ Welcomes Guest Stars From ‘Dharma & Greg’

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC,

Jenna Elfman I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I absolutely adore the show Brothers & Sisters. Great cast, great storylines, great Rob Lowe… well, you know what I mean. Anyway, time to bring in some guest stars to liven things up. Be on the lookout for former Dharma & Greg cast members Jenna Elfman and Susan Sullivan to make an appearance. Elfman played kooky earth-child Dharma to Sullivan’s uptight socialite, Kitty Montgomery. This time around, they’ll be playing mother and daughter rivals of the Walker clan. Sullivan plays Miranda Jones, while Elfman is a pregnant Lizzie Jones-Baker. The fun is underway when they take part in a rematch of a family game night, complete with new step-sis Rebecca. The episode will air April 15th.

Rob Lowe Extends Role on Brothers & Sisters

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Ratings,

Rob Lowe Great news for my favorite new show of the season. Rob Lowe, who was to guest star on a few episodes of Brothers & Sisters, will continue his stay for the rest of the season. The reason? You might guess that it’s his magical ability to never age (I mean, seriously, this guy looks fantastic). Well, perhaps that fountain of youth is responsible for the show’s highest ratings of the season. Lowe plays U.S. senator Robert McCallister, who appeared on Kitty Walker’s (Calista Flockhart) political talk show. She decided not to ask hard-hitting questions about the senator’s recent divorce in hopes that he would keep her brother Justin (Dave Annable) from having to be redeployed in the Army. He later went on to offer her a job on his campaign. While Lowe is listed as a special guest star, it’s rumored that he will appear in most of the 12 remaining episodes.
