Dancing With The Stars: Week 8

Dancing With The Stars

The Final Five competitors were each two dances away from next week’s semi-finals.  Read on to see how they fared tonight:

JENNIE GARTH (partner Derek Hough)
(Dance: Jive/ Song: ‘It Takes Two’)
Something about Jennie’s green-sequined outfit tonight screams mermaid to me.  (Tom Bergeron said her outfit made him crave frozen vegetables.)  I think she looks incredibly awkward with this fast-paced dance.  She seems a bit wobbly and a little sloppy overall.  Len said that the dance wasn’t one of her best; he wasn’t sure the performance was worthy of a berth in the semi-finals.  Bruno said Jennie wasn’t as sharp as she should have been.  Carrie Ann said she lacked good posture and clean pump action.  Score: 8/8/8 (24)

CAMERON MATHISON (partner Edyta Sliwinska)
(Dance: Viennese Waltz/ Song: ‘Harry Potter Theme’)
Cameron and Edyta make a beautiful pair tonight.  I really like his grey tux/tails and her pink gown is gorgeous.  He looks very confident with this dance and his lines look great.  Bruno said it was majestic and sweeping.  Carrie Ann complimented his great lines and holds.  Len praised their beautiful rotations.  Score: 9/9/9 (27)

MARIE OSMOND (partner Jonathan Roberts)
(Dance: Rumba/ Song: ‘My Cherie Amour’)
Although she’s great at faking just about anything, she seems very uncomfortable with this sexy dance.  At least it’s age-appropriate.  Carrie Ann said Marie really needs to be more aggressive with her performances.  Len thought the dance was sophisticated but felt it could have used more hip action.  Bruno said Marie needed content in her choreography.  Score: 8/8/8 (24)

HELIO CASTRONEVES (partner Julianne Hough)
(Dance: Paso Doble/ Song: ‘??’)
Helio looks like a cross between a vampire and the guy from Madonna’s ‘Take A Bow’ video.  Although he appears slightly stiff, Helio is turning out a bold and commanding performance tonight.  Although Len is not normally a fan of capes, he thought they did a good job.  Bruno thought Helio had incredible presence and a good Spanish line.  Carrie Ann liked his intensity and attention to detail.  Score: 9/9/9 (27)

MELANIE BROWN (partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy)
(Dance: Tango/ Song: ‘Personal Jesus’)
This intense dance reminds me a lot of her strong ‘Free Your Mind’ performance from last week.  I also liked that she got to wear pants again.  Bruno thought it was a strong and powerful performance.  Carrie Ann felt Melanie was concentrating too hard on the steps.  Len said her footwork was right on.  Score: 9/9/9 (27)

JENNIE GARTH (partner Derek Hough)
(Dance: Foxtrot/ Song: ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’)
Jennie looks very elegant and sophisticated in this peach dress.  Although she’s far more relaxed with this second number, she’s still not completely clean or crisp. Carrie Ann liked that Jennie had improved her posture, but she now wanted her to work on her chin.  Len thought she did a great job; he really liked her good heel turns.  Bruno said Jennie still needed to work on her tapping into her star potential.  Score: 9/9/8 (26)

CAMERON MATHISON (partner Edyta Sliwinska)
(Dance: Cha-cha-cha/ Song: ‘Brown Sugar’)
The outfits are far too distracting for me to enjoy.  Edyta looks like she’s wearing a disco-fied version of yet another Pocahantas number.  Meanwhile, Cameron was subjected to a boring brown two-piece.  Unfortunately, the dance - while clean - was just as boring as his outfit.  Len thought the performance felt wooden and unnatural. Bruno said it was too hard and stiff for a cha-cha-cha.  Carrie Ann said he needed to work on the moments in between forms.  Score: 8/8/8 (24)

MARIE OSMOND (partner Jonathan Roberts)
(Dance: Jive/ Song: ‘Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?’)
Although I really liked Marie’s cute cowgirl outfit, I thought the dance was far too ‘skippy’ for a jive.  She looked like she should be on the set of Oklahoma! rather than a ballroom floor.  Bruno said the cute and fun dance lacked enough jive.  Carrie Ann agreed with Mr. Tonioli.  Len said the jive was meant to be fun - just like Marie’s performance.  Score: 8/9/8 (25)

HELIO CASTRONEVES (partner Julianne Hough)
(Dance: Quickstep/ Song: ‘Hey Pachuco!’)
Helio now looks like a cross between Cab Calloway and Jim Carrey in The Mask.  It was a fun, energetic dance filled with exciting choreography.  Carrie absolutely loved the performance.  Len thought the ‘big dancing banana’ was fantastic.  Bruno said Helio had the finish line in sight.  Score: 10/10/10 (30) (Their first perfect score of the season.)

MELANIE BROWN (partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy)
(Dance: Mambo/ Song: ‘??’)
I really like Melanie’s salmon-colored fringe number.  Aaah! Apparently this is where Marie’s missing hip action went!  The dance really suited Mel well; it tapped into her femininity and showmanship.  Len said he was hypnotized by Melanie’s hips.  Bruno said Mel had rhythm running right through her.  Carrie Ann said it even looked like Maksim was having a good time.  Score: 9/10/10 (29)
