There seems to be no end to Alex Anthopoulos’ creativity. The Toronto Blue Jays GM made another “right move” yesterday when he signed Edwin Encarnacion to a one-year deal. It wasn’t the right move in that Encarnacion can turn the Blue Jays’ fortunes around or that he’s some diamond in the rough that nobody has noticed until now. This, however, may have been one of those right moves that not even Anthopoulos himself saw coming.

Another day, another oh-fer for Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees third baseman continues to chase home run number 600. A-Rod has been stuck on 599 for almost two weeks and in that time, interest in him achieving that milestone has been overshadowed by interest in him not hitting it. Countless numbers of pictures have been taken of Rodriguez’s swings, but not one has been truly worth anything, and the annoyance is starting to show as of late.

Why trading Jose Bautista is a bad idea

The major league home run leader increased his total by two on Tuesday night, as he mashed a three- and two-run home run against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. Toronto’s Jose Bautista has now broken the 30-home run mark and the Jays continue to put other teams on notice that he’s available. In fact, the Jays are listening to offers for a quarter of their roster, all of whom are moveable, but in Bautista’s case, it would not be a wise decision to ship him out of the city by the end of this week.

What the heck is going on with David Wright? Going into Thursday’s games, he has 55 strikeouts, which leads the Major Leagues and has him on pace to finish in the top 10 in baseball history for the most strikeouts in a season, which, by the way, is almost 80 more strikeouts than he’s had in a season in his career. Is there something wrong with Wright, or is he just going through the worst slump ever?

It’s almost time for managers to select their 25-man rosters. We’re less than two weeks away from Opening Day, and still several teams have tough choices to make at various positions. The Toronto Blue Jays are no exception. In a season that many expect to be a write-off before the first pitch is thrown, the Jays have the opportunity to really test the depth of their organization. One such battle for playing time comes in the form of first baseman/designated hitter Randy Ruiz and third baseman/outfielder Jose Bautista.

Lowell’s latest injury just a minor setback

Everything was going fine for Red Sox three-bagger Mike Lowell, but then in a game against Toronto on Friday afternoon, he fouled a pitch off his left knee in his first at bat and was helped off the field with a contusion. X-rays were negative, but for Lowell, who has seen limited playing time, this will only set back his preparation further as he battles for a roster spot. This injury may have to see him put on the disabled list to start the season in order to get more practice in.

Braves add Glaus to fill first base hole

Troy Glaus can add another of baseball’s divisions to the list he’s called home. The Atlanta Braves have finally made the official announcement that Glaus has been added to the roster as their new power-packed first baseman. The announcement has been a long-time coming due to a physical that had to be delayed while the Braves’ physicians celebrated the holiday season. Now that they’re back in the office, Glaus has passed his physical and will begin to collect on his guaranteed $2 million salary with incentives. He will move from third to first base and despite having almost no experience at the other end of the field, he is expected to fill in nicely.
