Eric HinskeEric Hinske has begun an unusually long offseason. After his Atlanta Braves were eliminated by the San Francisco Giants on Monday night, the 2002 American League Rookie of the Year finds himself unemployed yet again as his latest one year contract ended with the Braves hopes of making it back to the World Series for the first time since 1999. He’ll now have to go home and watch the Series on television for his first time since 2006.

Joe Maddon and Ron Gardenhire take early showers

Joe MaddonThe MLB playoffs have been flying over these first two days. We’ve already seen fantastic pitching performances, timely hitting, and a pair of American League managers given the boot on justifiable arguments with umpires. Tampa’s Joe Maddon and Minnesota’s Ron Gardenhire took early showers on Thursday and had to watch from the clubhouse as their respective teams fell behind 0-2 in their ALDS against Texas and New York. Maddon and Gardenhire will have an extra day each to cool off, as the American League takes a break while the National League takes center stage on Friday.

The Minnesota Twins thought they might have a problem when it was discovered before the season began that closer Joe Nathan needed Tommy John Surgery and was going to miss the entire year. The Twins record holder for saves in a single season was gone, and the organization was going to need a replacement quick if they wanted to keep stable one of the most solid bullpens in the game and return to the postseason.

Yankees and Rays playing for postseason matchups?

Yeah, technically Boston can still make the postseason, but let’s face reality; we know who the American League playoff teams will be. Minnesota has already clinched the Central and the Rangers have taken the West with relative ease. All that remains to be decided; with a week of baseball left; is who will play whom.

MLB not to expand instant replay

Bug SeligAfter brief discussions regarding instant replay, MLB Commissioner Bud Selig has let the world know he’s made another decision: baseball will not use an expanded form of instant replay during the 2010 postseason. Selig and the special committee that recommended changes to the 2011 schedule met on Monday night to discuss the possibility, but quickly but a stomp on the idea. In October instant replay will remain limited to reviews of home run balls and nothing more.

Josh HamiltonWhen Josh Hamilton crashed into the wall while catching a Delmon Young fly ball on Sept. 4, he probably wasn’t thinking about the injuries he might sustain. Now, almost three weeks later, it’s been revealed that he has two fractured ribs and may be out of the Rangers’ lineup for more than just the rest of this season. Hamilton is still hardly able to rotate his body, much less swing a bat, and his recovery continues to stall.

Adrian AucoinWith the incredible amount of shootouts in the 2009-10 season, you may be wondering who’s doing the best. That would be the Phoenix Coyotes; just another one of the unexpected bits of news to come out of Glendale, Arizona. Not only did they dominate throughout the regular season, Phoenix has a record-setting 14 shootout wins this season, and even more unexpectedly, 36-year old defenseman Adrian Aucoin has been a key part in almost half of them.
