Albert Pujols reports to St. Louis Cardinals camp without a contract

Albert Pujols reports to St. Louis Cardinals camp without a contractAlbert Pujols, arguably the best overall player in baseball today, did not come to a contract agreement with the St. Louis Cardinals by the self-imposed deadline of Wednesday, February 16th. The reason Pujols designated a deadline was to not cause any distraction during the season for the team. However, considering all the things that Pujols can do and what he's done for the organization, how can his pending free agency after the 2011 not cause any degree of distraction? The usual big money teams, New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, already have first baseman, but will undoubtedly have some interest should Pujols hit the market. Other interested teams include the Los Angeles Angels, Texas Rangers, and N.L. Central rivals, the Chicago Cubs.

D-Backs avoid arbitration with Kelly Johnson

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Kelly JohnsonThe Arizona Diamondbacks and Kelly Johnson avoided having an arbitration hearing when the two sides agreed to a one-year deal worth $5.85 million, slightly lower than the $6.5 million Johnson was hoping for, but still a hefty increase from his $2.35 contract last season. For now, Johnson and the D-Backs can focus on rebuilding the team that has taken less than a decade to fall from World Series champions to worst in the NL West.

Tony LaRussa accuses MLBPA of putting pressure on Albert Pujols

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, Front Office, MLB, News,

Tony LaRussa and Albert PujolsSt. Louis Cardinals manager, Tony LaRussa, is accusing the Major League Baseball Players Association of putting pressure on free agent-to-be Albert Pujols to sign for the richest contract in baseball history. Pujols is arguably the best player in baseball and it's imperative for the MLBPA that he is paid that way in order to establish and keep a precedent - the best players get the most money. If Pujols should settle for anything less than Alex Rodriguez's benchmark contract of $27.5 per for 10 years, it could set the stage for owners to pay below-market value for players. This all said, it's ultimately up to Pujols as to where he plays. He's in the proverbial driver's seat and despite the usual group of high revenue teams (New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox) already having first basemen, Pujols commands a lot of attention.

Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon to reunite with Tampa Bay Rays

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, MLB, News,

Manny and Johnny in Tampa BayFormer Boston Red Sox teammates, Manny Ramirez and Johnny Damon, could be reunited with the Tampa Bay Rays for the 2011 MLB season. They've been signed as free agents and are pending passing physicals before the deals are official. Since their run as part of the Red Sox World Series runs, both have moved on from Beantown, experiencing certain degrees of success, but can they help lead a young team in the Rays to any sort of success? The Rays lost key contributors during the offseason, such as Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, and Rafael Soriano. Hopefully, a reunion between Manny and Johnny works some sort of magic.

Albert Pujols sets spring training deadline

Albert Pujols, arguably the best player in baseball, has given the St. Louis Cardinals a deadline of spring training in order to get his contract situation settled. Pujols will be playing in his final contract year with the Cardinals when the 2011 MLB season begins. Reportedly, Pujols will test free agency should the extension not happen by spring training, but the Cardinals would be crazy not to. However, if it happens, Pujols would be in high demand as he is still only 30 years old and a perennial Triple Crown threat.

Carl Crawford reaches deal with the Boston Red Sox

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, MLB, News,

Carl CrawfordThe Boston Red Sox have signed Carl Crawford, arguably the top position player free agent this offseason. The addition of Crawford, to go along with the recent trade for Adrian Gonzalez will be a major boost to the Red Sox's offense that has a legitimate top of the line-up hitter and a big-time middle of the order hitter and run producer. Crawford reportedly signed with the Red Sox for seven years and $142 million.

Derek Jeter and New York Yankees agree to three-year deal

Posted by Dennis Velasco Categories: Athletes, MLB, News,

Derek Jeter Re-signsRejoice, New York Yankees fans, for Derek Jeter has re-signed with the team he started his career with and seems will end with. On Saturday, Jeter and the Yankees agreed to a three-year deal that will pay him $17 million on average per year. There's a player option for Jeter for a fourth season that will pay him $14 million for the extra season. There was a lot of ballyhoo regarding Jeter's contract for obvious reasons, but many knew that the deal would eventually get done as Jeter needed the Yankees and to a lesser degree, the Yankees needed Jeter. Jeter is one of the Yankees' all-time greats and, unquestionably, this generation's pinstriped best. However, the question remains if Jeter can bounce back from a down 2010 season? Both are figuratively and literally banking on it.

Aaron Harang working deal with San Diego Padres

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Rumors,

Aaron HarangThe San Diego Padres have begun to retool after having their starting rotation decimated. They lost Jon Garland and Kevin Correia, who combined for 24 wins last year, and also saw Chris Young leave the team, who was injured for most of the season, but who also has the potential to be an excellent pitcher in the middle of a rotation. Reports are surfacing that the Padres have inked former Cincinnati Reds starter Aaron Harang to a one-year deal worth $3 million.

Blue Jays ink deal with injured Dustin McGowan

Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,

Dustin McGowanThe Toronto Blue Jays have re-signed starter Dustin McGowan on a one-year deal worth $450,000. Normally this kind of deal isn’t worth noting, but it’s different here because injuries have prevented McGowan from throwing a full season, and he hasn’t pitched in a major league game since July 8, 2008. He’s made several attempts at a comeback but continually has found setbacks as his body fails to fully recover, leaving McGowan and the Blue Jays to wonder if he’ll ever pitch again.
