Cliff Lee signs with Philadelphia Phillies, creates best rotation ever
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
The Philadelphia Phillies may be the first team in history to go 162-0. In a stunning turn of events, Cliff Lee, the offseason’s most sought-after free agent, has opted to return to Philly to join Roy Halladay, Cole Hamels and Roy Oswalt in the starting rotation. We’ve seen phenomenal threesomes in the past, but a group of four like this comes around once a generation. Hamels may be the number four starter on this team, which is incredible, considering he’d be an ace for half of the other teams in baseball.

Derek Jeter gets an offer that may not be enough
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB,
The Yankees have offered Derek Jeter what can only be described as a fair deal. Three years for $45 million may not be the best offer that the Yankee captain can get if he does the unthinkable and tests the free agent market, but it’s more than enough to keep him comfortable. Besides, after coming off a 10-year deal that paid him $189 million, it’s not like Jeter needs any more padding in his bank account.

Derek Jeter reportedly looking for six-year deal
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Rumors,
It’s hard to imagine that Derek Jeter began his MLB career 15 years ago. He’s become one of the most recognizable players in the game and will be for years, perhaps decades to come. Now, he finds himself in a position to negotiate for a new contract after finishing a 10-year, $189M deal. Of course, he’ll be dealing with his hometown New York Yankees, but for the first time in his career, his actual worth may fall below what his demands will be.

Carl Crawford extends time in Tampa with long ball
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Rumors,
Carl Crawford will play at least one more game as a Ray. Thanks to an insurance home run in the top of the 9th in Game 3 of his team’s series against Texas, Tampa Bay staved off elimination and will live to play on Sunday. It seems right now that any game could be Crawford’s last in Tampa as he’ll test free agency this offseason and look for a team that can not only help him win a World Series, but pay him what he feels he’s worth to do so.

Scott Boras has signed another one. He inked Rays closer Rafael Soriano to a deal and will represent him as his contract with Tampa Bay comes to a close and he begins to search for a new; and significantly higher-paying deal. As one of the top closers in baseball this year, holding his own with the likes of Mariano Rivera, Jonathan Papelbon and Heath Bell, Soriano will demand top dollars from whatever team he winds up with.

Eric Belanger slammed by Washington Capitals
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, NHL, Rumors,
Eric Belanger’s offseason wasn’t the typical team shopping that most free agents experience. Belanger signed a deal with the Phoenix Coyotes, but that came after a deal that was more than done fell through with the Washington Capitals. Belanger became the victim of the free agent game and in the end chose to walk away from the organization. But was it the right move for he and his agent to make this situation a public one?

Carl Crawford possibly moving to the Bronx to join the New York Yankees?
Posted by Adrien Griffin Categories: Athletes, MLB, Rumors,
One of the biggest reasons for the Tampa Bay Rays’ emergence as an American League powerhouse has been Carl Crawford. The 1999 second round pick has grown up and become a premier major league left fielder, but when his 2010 season comes to an end, so will his contract and likely his time in St. Petersburg. Crawford will be a free agent this winter and will entertain offers from most of the teams in the league.

Now that Ilya Kovalchuk has finally made up his mind, the rest of the NHL can return to summer hours. After months of speculation of where this year’s top free agent would land, Kovy brought the discussion full-circle as he chose to stay in New Jersey, which is exactly where many thought he would end up when free agency opened up after the playoffs. Several teams tried their best to acquire the Russian-born scorer; most of them being the Los Angeles Kings; but in the end it was New Jersey who won.

It’s almost time for managers to select their 25-man rosters. We’re less than two weeks away from Opening Day, and still several teams have tough choices to make at various positions. The Toronto Blue Jays are no exception. In a season that many expect to be a write-off before the first pitch is thrown, the Jays have the opportunity to really test the depth of their organization. One such battle for playing time comes in the form of first baseman/designated hitter Randy Ruiz and third baseman/outfielder Jose Bautista.
