Linus Omark shaking things up in Edmonton

There seems to be an outbreak of young, cocky players in the NHL, and a lot of the stern veterans don’t seem to like it. First, P.K. Subban of the Canadiens was benched for his aggressive, take-no-crap-from-anybody style of play combined with the fact that he actually has thoughts inside his hockey player head that he’s willing to share. Now, Edmonton’s Linus Omark – a Swedish phenom – made his NHL debut against Tampa Bay on Friday night, and won the game by using a spin-a-rama move to throw off the goalie before netting the winning goal in a shootout.

Sean Avery’s antics a neverending story in the NHL

At this point it’s probably safe to assume that no force on earth can stop Sean Avery. Whether he’s bashing other players on the ice or ex-girlfriends in the media, this guy rubs everybody the wrong way. The latest infraction occurred on Sunday when Avery apparently sucker-punched Oilers defenseman Ladislav Smid after refusing to fight the Czech. While the video of the accusation is inconclusive, Avery’s history might lead you to believe that the Oilers have a valid argument.

Trio of youngsters ready to shine for the Edmonton Oilers

When the Edmonton Oilers start the 2010-11 season, they’ll ice a trio of 19-year-olds. First-overall pick Taylor Hall, World Juniors clutch man Jordan Eberle and Swedish phenom Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson are all set to make their NHL debuts with the NHL’s reigning worst-place team. Okay, Hall is technically 18-years-old, but he’ll turn 19 in November, so he gets a pass this time. He’s still the most likely of the trio to break camp with the Oilers anyway.

Edmonton finally finds reason to celebrate

TSN, Canada’s all-sports television network aired yesterday’s NHL Draft Lottery. The first 14 picks were ordered for the draft to take place on June 25 and 26, while the remaining 16 selections will be determined by the playoffs. After the climatic moment where the No. 1 picking team was revealed to be the Oilers, the program cut to a shot of Edmontonians celebrating in a bar. Did anybody tell these guys they finished in a convincing last place in all of hockey?

Patrick O’Sullivan of the Edmonton Oilers is looking a bit rough these days. In his first full season in orange and blue, he’s been little more than a burden to the NHL’s last place team. While Edmonton as a team share a number of “worsts,” O’Sullivan too finds himself at the bottom of a category that he’d rather not be able to boast about. At minus-32, he is ranked 849th in the league in plus-minus…out of 849.

The battle of the basement dwellers

It’s the proverbial ‘Clash of the whatever-the-opposite-of-a-Titan-is’ this Saturday night on Hockey Night in Canada. The Toronto Maple Leafs, who sit last in the Eastern Conference will welcome the Edmonton Oilers, who are last in the Western Conference, into the Air Canada Centre for an epic clash of mediocrity. These two teams lead the league in worst goal differential, goals allowed, and best golf score by points; none of which are categories they’d wish to lead though.

Are there any coaches liked less than Ron Wilson? His comments about Team Canada after their Olympic victory against his American squad have put him under the spotlight and fans are calling for his head. Now back as the head honcho of the last-place team in the Eastern Conference, Wilson is once again just the most recent of a string of Leaf coaches who are going through rough times. The three worst records in the NHL belong to the Hurricanes, Leafs, and Oilers. With a combined record of 63-100-24, all three have more than just that in common. The three coaches are the three most recent heads of the Maple Leafs.

The NHL’s most gentlemanly player: Val Fonteyne

If you were asked to name the NHL player with the most penalty minutes in a game, you’d probably say Randy Holt with his 67 on Mar. 11, 1979. If you were asked the same question about a season, you’d know Dave Schultz had 472 in 1974-75. And everybody knows that Tiger Williams’ 4,421 career penalty minutes is first. However, you probably would have a hard time naming who has the least amount of penalties in these categories. Not even the NHL’s Official Guide and Record Book. Former NHL forward Val Fonteyne may be as good a guess as any to top those lists.

Oilers stop slide, finally

Plan the parade route! The Edmonton Oilers are undefeated in February! Too bad for them that they went winless in January. They picked up two points in overtime losses thanks to the NHL’s generous point structure. A 13-game losing streak dropped the Oilers far out of contention and into the basement in the Western Conference. Part of their losses included a pair to the Calgary Flames who, for the first time in history, swept the season series in the Battle of Alberta by easily taking all six games. To say things have never looked bleaker for Edmonton may be an understatement.

Canadiens and Laraque part ways

Is Georges Laraque being forced into some sort of unceremonious retirement? The Montreal Canadiens who are now Laraque’s former team, have come to a crossroads with the 33-year old enforcer and decided to effectively “buy him out,” by telling him that while they will continue to sign his paychecks, he won’t put on a Canadiens uniform ever again. He signed a three-year contract with Montreal, but has now been taken off the roster, just halfway into the deal.
