The Detroit Tigers' Justin Verlander is making a strong case to start the 2011 MLB All Star Game for the American League. He threw his second consecutive complete game on Sunday and now has recorded a “W” in five straight starts. During those, he’s pitched 41.2 innings with a 0.86 ERA, 37 strikeouts and a 0.65 WHIP. Truly ridiculous numbers over the last three weeks. And none of those include the no-hitter he threw on May 7.

Zack Greinke to start on DL with injured rib

Due to an extreme game of pick-up basketball, Zack Greinke has a hairline fracture in a rib on the left side of his body and will likely start the MLB season on the disabled list. Fans of the right-hander in Milwaukee will have to wait a few more weeks before they see their new ace in a Brewers uniform. It’s the latest mini-tragedy for a team who has had more than their fair share of them over the last 30 years.

Adam Wainwright suffers an elbow injury

The St. Louis Cardinals suffered a big blow to their success when it was reported that pitcher Adam Wainwright has a possible serious elbow injury and could miss the entire 2011 season. Saying that the loss of Wainwright is damaging to the Cardinals is an understatement as he's won 39 games the past two seasons, including 20 games in 2010, finishing with a 2.42 ERA and 213 strikeouts, as well as second in the voting for National League Cy Young, which Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies won. Wainwright is in the middle of his prime at 29-years-old, so losing a season hurts if it comes to that. However, he's still young enough to recover from elbow surgery, most likely Tommy John surgery if he needs to go under the knife. He's in the middle of getting a second opinion before surgery becomes a tangible option.

When Trevor Hoffman announced his retirement, a lot of people quickly spoke up about whether this guy was worthy of the Hall of Fame or not, and if so, should it be as a first-ballot member. As a career reliever (he never started a game), he has not had the same opportunities in the game as a starting pitcher or a position player, but he has silently helped define the closer’s role in the bullpen; at least as silently as a guy with his career number can.

It seems like the baseball writers may finally be coming around. They selected Felix Hernandez as the 2010 American League Cy Young Award winner, and for the second year in a row, they’ve opted to overlook win-loss record and give the top pitcher’s award to a pitcher who truly deserves it. With a 13-12 record, Hernandez looks like one of the most average pitchers in the game, but when you look deeper, you’ll find that his record is a gross misrepresentation of what he did.

Sabathia ready for first 20-win season

CC Sabathia, New York’s ace, is a four-time all-star. He is also a World Series Champion, won a Cy Young Award with the lowly Cleveland Indians in 2007, finished in the top five in voting two other times, finished runner-up for Rookie of the Year in 2001, and has even made a couple of attempts at league MVP. At 29-years of age, Sabathia has already had a better career than most. Despite all of this, he has never been a 20-game winner.

Cliff Lee should just stop unpacking. With yesterday’s trade to Texas, Lee will now pitch for his fourth team in the last two seasons. The Mariners are clearly waving the white flag, which is obvious by the fact that they traded Lee before the break and even more so because they traded their best pitcher to a team in their own division. When it’s all said and done, 2010 will only be a disappointing season for the Mariners and their fans.

What’s next for Greinke?

How much can you do when you’ve already done it all? Lots, if you’re Zack Greinke. As everybody saw, the starting pitcher lit up the opposition and won the 2009 AL Cy Young Award with the Kansas City Royals, putting everybody else on notice that he’s officially arrived and ready to throw. And at just 26 years old, there’s still plenty of throwing left in the right arm of the Royals’ ace.

Have you ever wondered why relief pitchers don’t win the Cy Young Award more often? We’re not talking about the guys who come in to clean up a mess when down by seven runs. We’re talking about the guys who come in the tough situations, whether it is a two-inning setup man with an ERA under 1.50 who keeps his team in the game, or the “lights out” closer who shuts the door 45 out of 50 times. These are the guys who deserve just as much recognition as a 20-game winner, but just aren’t taken as seriously.

NL Cy Young Award winner - Tim Lincecum

Tim’s done it again. Tim Lincecum of the San Francisco Giants won his second consecutive National League Cy Young Award. Lincecum edged out the pair of St. Louis Cardinals aces, Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. He becomes the first pitcher to repeat as the winner since Randy Johnson did so with the Diamondbacks four times from 1999-2002. It makes sense that the number one pitcher of 2008 won again, as while Lincecum’s wins total was down in 2009, he improved in almost every other area.
