Calgary Flame-out will clinch two more playoff spots

A lot of teams are counting on a Calgary Flames loss tonight. Not the least of which are the Colorado Avalanche, who welcome the Albertans into the Pepsi Center in a pivotal Western Conference match that may have a tremendous impact on the playoff standings. As it stands now, Colorado is on a three-game losing streak and are struggling to hold on to eighth place while the Flames, winners of two in a row, currently sit ninth, two points back.

The Los Angeles Kings’ freefall continues. They dropped their fourth straight game on Monday; third straight in regulation, losing to Minnesota 3-2. The last time they got a point was a 4-3 shootout loss to Colorado. Since the Olympic break, the Kings are 5-7-2, which has seriously hurt their playoff positioning and with seven games left in the regular season, some are beginning to wonder if they’ll be able to hold on to their playoff spot.

Youthful Avalanche trying to turn around misfortunes

The Colorado Avalanche have got young and got good. After missing the playoffs last season and not advancing past the second round since 2002, the Avs are in the final stages of a rebuild and may squeeze themselves into the playoffs, currently holding on to the eighth and final spot in the Western Conference, but they do have some breathing room between them and Calgary. They’re also only five points back of third place, so things are still very much up in the air for Colorado.

The Vancouver Canucks hit a snag in the last two weeks, dropping three of their last four games, something they haven’t done since the beginning of February. Vancouver is still doing fine as far as playoff seeding goes, but the final few weeks of the season is hardly the time to go cold as ice. What’s worse for the Canucks is that when they lose, then tend to lose in regulation play. They have the lowest total of OTL points in the NHL with four.

It took the defending Stanley Cup champions to bring the Leafs down. Toronto is playing way out of its league this month, having taken nine of their last 13 games, and they’ve been doing it competitively. Eight of their nine wins have come either in overtime or a shootout. The only other was a 6-4 win against last-place Edmonton. Sunday evening’s 5-4 shootout loss to Pittsburgh is the latest sign that while 2009-10 is a write-off for the lackluster Leafs, some minor offseason tweaks and improvements might bode well for Toronto, and poorly for the rest of the league.

What do you get when you mix raw talent with good timing? The answer is Anaheim Ducks right winger Corey Perry. The 24-year-old Ontario native has been with the Ducks for five seasons now and has enjoyed relative success throughout much of his career but has flown under the radar with his team due to consistently good play. As they say, ‘where there’s smoke, there’s fire’, and until the 2009-10 season, there’s been clear skies in Anaheim.

Sharks, Blackhawks clinch playoff spots

The playoff picture became a little clearer on Thursday night as the top two seeds in the Western Conference clinched playoff spots. San Jose shut out Dallas 3-0 to both put them out of reach of ninth-place Calgary as well as leapfrog into first place over Chicago. Those same Blackhawks also clinched a berth, despite an 8-3 shellacking at the hands of Columbus. The Flames loss to the Islanders gave Chicago the edge in tie-breaking points.

The Montreal Canadiens, who outplayed the Buffalo Sabres for 57 minutes on Wednesday night, managed to salvage a point and take sole possession of sixth place in the Eastern Conference, but it was at great expense. As one of the hottest teams since the Olympic break, Montreal really folded up last night. After taking a 2-0 lead, thanks to a pair from Andrei Kostitsyn, Buffalo’s late pressure resulted in the equalizing goals coming with 1:59 and then :48 left in the game. They went on to win in a shootout.

The Winged Wheels are back on track. Or road. Or flying. Or wherever a “winged wheel” would be used. Either way, the Detroit Red Wings are playing hot and back into a playoff position standing firm as they try to repel the naysayers. The playoffs are on the horizon and as it stands now, the Red Wings are playing some of their best hockey of the season and are moving up the standings in the Western Conference.

Elliott turns around Sens with back-to-back shutouts

Almost everything is coming up Ottawa. The Senators have re-opened a four point lead in the Eastern Conference over Philadelphia and Montreal, thanks largely to a pair of shutouts against those two opponents. Brian Elliott was called to duty and shut the door twice; first in a 2-0 win against the Canadiens then another 2-0 blanking of the Flyers in back-to-back nights. The pair was his fourth and fifth shutouts of the season. He now has 25 wins total.
