If you haven’t heard of Scott Downs, you’re not the only one. But you will. The 34-year-old left-handed reliever just reached a deal with the Los Angeles Angels, agreeing to a three-year, $15 million contract that will see Downs ship out of Canada for the first time since 2000. Downs made his MLB debut with the Cubs, but joined the Expos partway through the season, then moved to Toronto in 2005 and has been there ever since.

The MLB Rule 5 Draft is a peculiar thing. Teams choose to not offer contracts to some of their free agents, saying they need to keep room on their 40-man rosters for the Rule 5 Draft, and then on draft day, they don’t fill up the empty slots, claiming they need to keep a few positions open to sign free agents before Spring Training. Thursday saw this year’s draft come and go to close the Winter Meetings, and as usual, nobody noticed.

Zack Greinke sitting tight while Cliff Lee is on market

Zack Greinke’s new uniform has been one of the biggest non-stories of the Winter Meetings. The Royals aren’t interested in playing their ace until Cliff Lee chooses a new home. There’s a lot of benefit in waiting for Lee to make up his mind, as most teams are interested in Lee before Greinke anyway. Once Lee’s off the market, Greinke becomes America’s most wanted and the Royals can barter for as much as they want. They’ll find a buyer willing to overpay somewhere.

Carl Crawford reaches deal with the Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have signed Carl Crawford, arguably the top position player free agent this offseason. The addition of Crawford, to go along with the recent trade for Adrian Gonzalez will be a major boost to the Red Sox's offense that has a legitimate top of the line-up hitter and a big-time middle of the order hitter and run producer. Crawford reportedly signed with the Red Sox for seven years and $142 million.

Marvin Miller missed the baseball Hall of Fame by one vote. Former GM Pat Gillick got an overwhelming nod of approval, while the former executive director of the MLBPA fell short by a step. This isn’t an outrageous snubbing by any means, but it is another black eye on what’s already a very controversial process. Why the everlasting legacies of people is left up to such a small collection of individuals to decide is astonishing.

Derek Jeter and New York Yankees agree to three-year deal

Rejoice, New York Yankees fans, for Derek Jeter has re-signed with the team he started his career with and seems will end with. On Saturday, Jeter and the Yankees agreed to a three-year deal that will pay him $17 million on average per year. There's a player option for Jeter for a fourth season that will pay him $14 million for the extra season. There was a lot of ballyhoo regarding Jeter's contract for obvious reasons, but many knew that the deal would eventually get done as Jeter needed the Yankees and to a lesser degree, the Yankees needed Jeter. Jeter is one of the Yankees' all-time greats and, unquestionably, this generation's pinstriped best. However, the question remains if Jeter can bounce back from a down 2010 season? Both are figuratively and literally banking on it.

Aaron Harang working deal with San Diego Padres

The San Diego Padres have begun to retool after having their starting rotation decimated. They lost Jon Garland and Kevin Correia, who combined for 24 wins last year, and also saw Chris Young leave the team, who was injured for most of the season, but who also has the potential to be an excellent pitcher in the middle of a rotation. Reports are surfacing that the Padres have inked former Cincinnati Reds starter Aaron Harang to a one-year deal worth $3 million.

Sources say Adrian Gonzalez traded to the Boston Red Sox

Reportedly, San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez will be going to the Boston Red Sox in a trade that would bring back minor league prospects to the Padres. Gonzalez, an All-Star and Gold Glove winner, has long been coveted by Red Sox GM Theo Epstein, who has attempted to trade for Gonzalez previously. Gonzalez will instantly move to the middle of the line-up and should be a big-time run producer because of his ability to go yard, draw walks and get on base, and hit for a hgh batting average. Removing himself from the cavernous depths of Petco Park to the cozy confines of Fenway should increase his statistics to some significant degree.

The Toronto Blue Jays have re-signed starter Dustin McGowan on a one-year deal worth $450,000. Normally this kind of deal isn’t worth noting, but it’s different here because injuries have prevented McGowan from throwing a full season, and he hasn’t pitched in a major league game since July 8, 2008. He’s made several attempts at a comeback but continually has found setbacks as his body fails to fully recover, leaving McGowan and the Blue Jays to wonder if he’ll ever pitch again.

When you have a player like Cliff Lee on the market, only two kinds of teams will make a real run to get him: those in contention and those willing to overpay. Teams rebuilding will rarely offer anything beyond a phone call to an agent before bowing out, which is why you won’t see Lee wind up in a city like Oakland or Toronto, who both have excellent young pitching staffs, but neither think they are only one or two moves away from seriously contending.
