Shaun Marcum and the Milwaukee Brewers trying to right the ship

Picked to finish in the mid-80s in wins by many experts, the Milwaukee Brewers got off to a rough start, losing their first four in a row, including the season opener by way of a walk-off home run. They’re playing under-.500 so far and have already put themselves in a hole. While the season is still young, there are already a few disappointments making this difficult for the Brew Crew. First of all, Zack Greinke has yet to make an appearance (and likely won’t until May) and secondly, Shaun Marcum has been anything but Marcum-esque.

Toronto Maple Leafs’ quest for a number one goalie

Now that the Toronto Maple Leafs mercifully have been officially taken themselves out of playoff contention, the members of Leafs Nation have begun asking who they will turn to in goal for the 2011-12 season. After beginning the season with veteran J.S. Giguere and supposed-goalie-of-the-future Jonas Gustavsson, the Leafs found themselves playing behind most teams thanks to miserable netminding. With continued injuries to Giguere’s groin and Gustavsson’s heart, the Leafs looked way down the depth chart and brought up James Reimer.

If you’re a Boston Red Sox fan, ever been to Boston, or heck, even know what Yawkey Way is, you know what a frenzy the city is in right now over the team’s worst start to a season since 1945. Having been swept in straight series by the Cleveland Indians and the Texas Rangers looks bad, though. The Red Sox return to Fenway Park tomorrow to welcome the rival and hated New York Yankees. The way things have gone so far for the Red Sox, the fans may end up booing both teams.

Marty Turco allegedly wagers with fan during game

Despite not having played in a game since March 17, Chicago Blackhawks goalie Marty Turco is making headlines. Turco is under investigation for allegedly wagering on Tuesday night’s Blackhawks game against the Montreal Canadiens while on the bench. A Habs fan called into a Montreal-based radio show to talk about how he and Turco made several bets about how the game would end up. After losing 2-1 in overtime, Turco paid up in several Canadian bills.

New York Rangers lose Ryan Callahan with fractured ankle

Everybody knows that Zdeno Chara has the hardest shot in the NHL, but nobody knows that more right now that Ryan Callahan of the New York Rangers. After blocking a Chara blast in Monday’s 5-3 comeback win against the Boston Bruins, Callahan left the game and it was later confirmed that he fractured his ankle on the play and is out indefinitely. Chances are Callahan won’t be back, regardless how long the Rangers playoff run extends.

Tsuyoshi Nishioka trying to become the next Ichiro

Everybody knows the legend that is Ichiro Suzuki. As a 27-year-old in 2001, he made his debut for the Seattle Mariners and proceeded to define what it meant to be a Japanese-born athlete being successful in MLB. His career accolades already suggest he’s Hall of Fame material and this past weekend he became the career leader in hits for the Mariners. The search to find the next great Japanese player is on, yet less than a dozen position players have cracked the big leagues.

Philadelphia Phillies relievers are on the hot seat

It wasn’t a typical Roy Halladay start on Friday against the Houston Astros, going only six innings, but more true to form, he did limit the opposition to just one run on five hits. However, it took a walk-off victory to give the Philadelphia Phillies their first win in what many think will be another march to the World Series. And with a widely-publicized rotation that features Halladay, Cliff Lee, Roy Oswalt, and Cole Hamels (not to mention the best fifth-starter in baseball, Joe Blanton), who would argue?
