Lofa Tatupu brings the pain for the Seattle Seahawks

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
2007 RECORD: 10-6

Overview: Winners of the NFC West division the last four seasons, the Seattle Seahawks look to keep in control of one of the weaker divisions in the league and give head coach Mike Holmgren, who has already stated that this is his last year with the team, a season to remember. The Seahawks made it to the divisional round of the playoffs in 2007, but eventually lost to Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers. The Seahawks are looking to bounce back this year with a solid defensive effort and a reliable and oftentimes underrated offense.

Frank Gore on the run for The San Francisco 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
2007 RECORD: 5-11

Overview: Coming from a dismal 6-12 season in 2007, having a combination of 25 wins, and 55 losses since the 2002 season, the San Francisco 49ers are a long way from their once dominant glory under the Bill Walsh and George Seifert eras.  The team has gone through three head coaches, a plethora of starting quarterbacks, and five offensive coordinators during that span.  The Niners are run by owners John York and Denise DeBartolo, who are struggling to run a successful business, and rebuild a once prominent and well-respected franchise.

NFL Preview: Kansas City Chiefs

Tony Gonzalez of the Kansas City Chiefs

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS
2007 RECORD: 4-12

Overview: The Kansas City Chiefs……wow. I don’t know where to start. When Trent Green left the team to get knocked out in Miami, the once deafening Arrowhead Stadium could’ve been mistaken for a ballet recital.  Team chemistry was at an all-time high!  Green was made for the Chiefs, and the Chiefs were made for Green. Why would Green leave an offense that had everything, but wide receivers, especially with the addition of Dwayne Bowe helping the receiving situation. The Chiefs looked tremendous on paper in the beginning of the season with All-Pros Larry Johnson in the backfield and one of the best tight ends in NFL history in Tony Gonzalez. Green left and was part of arguably one of the worst teams in NFL history, the 2007 Miami Dolphins. Moving on, the Chiefs weren’t better off without Green under center. Early in the season the Chief’s main rusher, Johnson, was injured. Chiefs’ fans then saw the return of a huge fan favorite, Priest Holmes. No sooner than he had come, Holmes received a career-ending back injury. Not to pour salt in the wound, but Kansas City wasn’t exactly a hot spot for QB’s either - Brodie who? Damon Huard? But, in all fairness there is no Q and B in team.  And unfortunately, no real protection as either as the offensive line gave up a jaw-breaking 55 sacks. Chiefs fans were hit hard last year, but as they say, “after the night the sun must rise.” In no other league is that theme more prevalent than in the NFL, and hopefully for the Chiefs.

JaMarcus Russell hopes to live up to the Oakland Raiders expectations

OAKLAND RAIDERS
2007 RECORD: 4-12

Overview: Overall, the Oakland Raiders have nowhere left to go but up. The team has made significant changes in their coaching staff, player personnel, and overall style of play. The team that showcased a gun-slinging offense that was led by Rich Gannon is seemingly long gone. In his sophomore year, head coach Lane Kiffin led the Raiders to only four wins, but ended the season as the sixth-highest rushing team in the league. Things are finally looking better for what seemed to be an endless black hole.

SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
2007 RECORD: 11-5

Overview: The San Diego Chargers opened the season 1-3 and the city of San Diego wanted to run Marty Schottenheimer’s replacement at head coach, Norv Turner, out of town. Turner turned around the season quickly, eventually managing to achieve a 10-2 record for the remainder of the season. In the end, Turner led the Chargers to an AFC West division title. During the playoffs, the Bolts defeated the Tennessee Titans and the Indianapolis Colts before losing to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game. Turner set the bar high in his first season and now has to live up to it.

Champ Bailey of the Denver Broncos breaks it up

DENVER BRONCOS
2007 RECORD: 7-9

Overview: For only the second time in 13 seasons, Mike Shanahan directed the Denver Broncos to a losing season (7-9). The offense couldn’t put up the points that they used to, but they did move the football as they finished the season 11th in total offense and averaging 346.3 yards per game. The Broncos are a well-rounded team and as every NFL coach knows, that is what makes them so hard to stop. Shanahan wouldn’t have it any other way.

Dean Browski’s NFL Week 1 Picks

Posted by Dean Browski Categories: NFL,

Alright, here we go!  Week 1 in the NFL kicks off tonight as does our data gathering for the rest of the season.  I am excited as I know you are, but let’s take a deep breath, curb our enthusiasm and get down to business.  I apply a guideline of not going over 3-stars in Week 1. (Click Here to Learn About Stars.)  It is a guideline, driven by the belief that this is the least informed we will be all season long, so any extreme confidence you have in a game is based on speculation not facts.  There are many unknowns at this point, so let’s allow things to play out so we can make better decisions as the season
progresses.  Its not where you start, its where you finish.

Early Week Thoughts on NFL Week 1 Point Spreads

Posted by Dean Browski Categories: NFL,

When to buy?  A question that can perplex the best investors in the world, but one that you must ask yourself if you are to ever turn your gambling into something more than an emotional money grab.  If you wait until Sunday morning like a lot of people do, then you are missing out on two very vital aspects of being a professional.  First, you may have lost out on the opportunity to get a team you like at a more favorable point spread.  Secondly, if you are looking at the lines for the first time on Sunday then you have no point of reference on how the line fluctuated during the week.  This is information that tells a tale, a tale that you should be attentive to.

I will share a bit of my methodology, but I strongly suggest that you devise your own methodology to view, and track the various movements.  There is no perfect system, but there are imperfect ones.  The most imperfect is to not have one at all.  In my system, I go through every game before knowing the actual line and I set my own.  I then add the actual line next to each game, along with two other bits of information that sheds some light on what the rest of the betting public is thinking.  ESPN has a line listed next to each game which is the average point spread as set by the users of the site.  Covers.com also has something they call Consensus which is a percentage of people, using Wagerline.com, who have selected a team with the point spread at various times in the line’s history.  Please, please, please remember that the Vegas line is a product of what the public thinks and believes.
