Sunday Ratings: Theater Awards Don’t Translate to TV

Although Tony Awards telecasts have never been ratings goldmines, last night’s event had to compete with golf and basketball. Yesterday’s contest between the Celtics and the Lakers gave ABC another win in both the viewers and the demos.
8pm
- NBC‘s coverage of the U.S. Open (3.9/13 in-18-49) attracted 13.8 million golf fans.
- Jimmy Kimmel‘s special (8.2 million, 3.2/11) did 800,000 better than last Sunday; the NBA pre-game show (9.8 million, 4.0/12) grew by 1.9 million.
- Approximately 6.2 million theater lovers watched the 2008 Tony Awards (1.1/3).
- The Simpsons* (3.7 million, 1.8/6) was down by 400,000; King of the Hill* (3.6 million, 1.7/5) slipped by 300,000.
- Everybody Hates Chris* (1.1 million, 0.4/1) and Aliens in America* (1.1 million, 0.4/1) turned out similar numbers.

Thursday Ratings: Basketball Courts the Fans

The Boston Celtics’ surprise comeback last night was the biggest attraction of the evening. Thanks to the heated contest, ABC had its 8th consecutive win in the demos on a Thursday.
8pm
- A Wednesday edition of Million Dollar Password (9.5 million, 2.0/7 in 18-49) topped its hour.
- Jimmy Kimmel (2.9/10) kicked off the basketball coverage with 7.8 million; the NBA pre-game special (8.2 million, 3.2/11) grew from there.
- Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (1.8/6) tested 6.1 million.
- My Name is Earl* (1.1/4) had 3.5 million entertained.
- Smallville* (1.9 million, 0.8/3) did slightly better than before.

Game 3 between the Boston Celtics and the LA Lakers overpowered FOX’s reality block. ABC wound up passing its competitors in both the viewers and the demos.

- NCIS* (10 million, 1.9/6 in 18-49) had a 900,000 climb.
- The NBA pre-game show (3.6/11) drew in 9.1 million.
- The Jimmy Kimmel special (2.9/10) kicked off the evening with 7.8 million.
- The Moment of Truth (6 million, 2.4/8) was off by 700,000.
- Most Outrageous Moments (6 million, 1.8/6) improved by 300,000.

Despite weekly American Idol performances - and a revealing Guitar Hero commercial - nothing could apparently prepare David Cook for the challenge he tackled last night.
Idol‘s Season 7 champion said singing the national anthem before yesterday’s NBA game made him far more uneasy than any of his competition numbers.
“It’s the one song you don’t want to mess up. I’m going to try not to notice Jack Nicholson sitting in the front row and think about the lyrics.”

Sunday Ratings: NBA Scores for ABC

Game Two between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers was by far the most exciting thing on TV yesterday. Up against mostly repeats, ABC easily had a hold on the night.
8pm
- Million Dollar Password (9.6 million, 2.1/6) slipped 1.1 million from last week.
- Jimmy Kimmel (2.9/9 in 18-49) got 7.4 million fans warmed up; the pre-game portion of the basketball game (3.1/9) attracted 7.9 million.
- Most Outrageous Moments* (1.5/5) averaged 4.9 million over two hours.
- The Simpsons* (4.1 million, 1.9/6) was down by 400,000; King of the Hill* (3.9 million, 1.8/5) only lost 100,000.
- Everybody Hates Chris* (904,000, 0.3/1) was off by 16,000; Aliens in America* (1 million, 0.4/1) was actually up 120,000.

Guess Who: NBA Live 07 Predicts NBA Finals

The heavily-favored San Antonio Spurs will be taking on the Cleveland Cavaliers in this year’s NBA Finals, which start Thursday night. EA simulated the series using their most recent NBA title, NBA Live 07. The results are pretty close to what most people are expecting - the Spurs win in six games, Tim Duncan earns MVP and San Antonio takes home its fourth title in nine years.
I’d have to agree with that outcome; LeBron can surely will the Cavs to at least two wins in this series. I’d run a simulation using NBA Live 07 myself to see if I could get any different results, but I don’t hate myself enough to play Live 07. And please, dear readers, don’t torture yourself by trying to be brave and do this yourself. NBA 2K7 for the win.

- De La Hoya vs. Mayweather: The fight that was supposed to save boxing was a waste of cash.
- What happened to good boxing? Roger Clemens Returns to Baseball - $28 million to play for the Yankees.
- David Ortiz: Doesn’t think Barry Bonds is on steriods. What?!?
- Golden State Warriors are the funnest team in basketball, fantastic in the post-season.

Lost: Greatest Hits - David’s Top Five of Awesomeness

If the “Greatest Hits” episode of Lost proved one thing, it’s that the writers of Lost are stealing my “Top 5 of Awesomeness” idea and incorporating it in their show. Jealous much? Fine, fine, you can make it up to me by having me write for your show. Deal?
Maybe not. Still, as the penultimate (and really, how often do you get the chance to use that word?) episode, it was a terrific way of setting things up for the big climactic two hour finale, which I’ll watch on TiVo right after I find out that Jordin won Idol.
In the meantime, who’s ready for five awesome things?
EVERYBODY GETS A LINE. EVERYBODY! - Well, except Locke. People often gripe that such-and-such episode didn’t have such-and-such character in it, and I’m typically annoyed by that complaint. I mean, there are roughly 108 people in the cast, so each one of them can’t really be front and center every week, otherwise each episode would be about 7 hours long. Which wouldn’t be all that bad of a thing, considering what some of the networks are going to be putting on the air next season.
Oh, and side note to CBS: Your new show “Moonlight,” the one about the vampire who is a private investigator and hates other vampires? Yeah, I would go back to whoever pitched that show and make sure he/she is not just copying scripts from the show “Angel,” which, if you didn’t see it, was on the WB and was about, hmm, how should I put this, THE EXACT SAME THING. Come on.
Anyway, giving the complainers nothing to complain about, nearly every character was integrated into the storylines of this episode. With the exception of Locke (and, if you have to get technical, Tom/Mr. Friendly), the following characters were part of “Greatest Hits”: Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Jin, Sun, Claire, Charlie, Hurley, Desmond, Sayid, Rousseau, Rose, Bernard, Aaron, Naomi, Richard, Karl, Ben, Juliette, Alex, and even Vincent the dog made an appearance. That’s an awesome episode right there.
