Box Office Breakdown: Tyler Perry Produces Another Hit

Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns

This past Easter weekend, Tyler Perry proved once again that he has the Midas touch.  Although his latest venture, Meet the Browns, only came in second, the film bested ! with its per screen take.  Perry’s film averaged $10,011 per theater—thousands better than Horton‘s performance ($6208).  The latter movie was also showing in twice as many locations.

But the Dr. Seuss adaptation wasn’t the only film to snare a prize away from the writer/actor/director.  - a small feature from The Weinstein Company - entered the Top Ten with an impressive $10,414 average.  While Browns was being shown on 2006 screens, Moon was showing on only 266.  The movie, co-starring America Ferrera, wound up being the top domestic scorer ever for a Spanish-languaged film.

In other chart news, Owen Wilson’s debuted at #4 while another Asian horror remake, Shutter, took in $10.5 million for a third place finish.  Films booted out of this week’s Top Ten were , Doomsday, The Other Boleyn Girl and The Spiderwick Chronicles.

Movie Remakes: Killer Tomatoes, Rosemary’s Baby

Attack of the Killer TomatoesAlthough I have a hard time believing there are people out there born after the ‘70s, I understand there are many who’ve never even heard of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.  Fortunately for them, there will soon be a remake.

Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine - the creators behind the “Ask A Ninja” web shorts -  have taken on the challenge of retooling the cult classic.  Although the update’s budget will undoubtedly be larger than the original’s (the first film reportedly cost less than $100,000), it’s unclear how far the writers will deviate from the 1978 storyline.

The movie about murderous fruit spawned three sequels including Return of the Killer Tomatoes and Killer Tomatoes Strike Back.  (‘s career managed to survive an appearance in the former.)  No target date for the redo has been announced.

Creepy Trailer Alert: The Strangers

It’s been a while since a trailer for a supposed horror movie has actually piqued my interest….let alone scared me.  That is until now.

If The Strangers doesn’t end up being one of the creepiest movies in some time, the editing crew behind this teaser should win an award for Best Act of Deception.

The movie - starring and Scott Speedman - hit theaters May 30th.

Horton Hears a Who

Here are some possible suggestions for your upcoming weekend:

Trailer for Lost Boys 2

UPDATE:  I stand corrected.  It turns out Corey Haim will be in the film after all, though his role is being left vague.  For all we know, he could be a corpse.

Here it is -  the moment you’ve all been waiting for:  The release of the Lost Boys 2 trailer.

The sequel not only comes out 21 years after the original, the movie is also set “in another seaside town” 21 years later.  Weirdly enough, - who reprises his Edgar Frog character - looks exactly the same.  (His brother in the 1987 version, Jamison Newlander, also returns as Alan Frog.)

Although it was once believed that would be starring as well, he is not in this very unnecessary sequel.  (Let’s just say the guy has ‘issues’.)

And in case you wondering why the girl in the clip looks so familiar, that’s Autumn Reeser (a.k.a. Taylor Townsend from ).

The Worst Movie Title So Far This Year

Some movie titles are meant to give you a chuckle (), others make you question the film overall.

This upcoming horror flick is based off a Clive Barker short story by the same name.  I don’t want to give the punchline away (you can read it after the jump, if you’d like), so I’m going to withhold the name.  If you’re anything like the audience I saw this trailer with, you’ll be laughing by the end.

Box Office Breakdown: Hannah Montana Humiliates Her Elders

Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus

It’s now time for the entertainment industry to take notice:  a 15-year-old girl has officially become the hottest thing thing around.  already had a hit TV series () and a sold-out concert tour, but now she has a record-breaking movie as well.

The limited run of her 3-D film, , made waves on what is usually considered a slow weekend for movies.  (Audiences are usually plopped in front of the TV watching the .)  The pic earned over $31 million, surpassing the total set by 1998’s during the same football weekend.  (That weeper grossed $25.2 million.)  Miley also rocked a stellar $45,560 per screen average.  In comparison, this week’s #2 (), earned $40,000 less per theater.  Fortunately, those unable to snag a Montana ticket now have their chance.  The wildly successful film has been extended indefinitely.

Box Office Breakdown: Rambo Outgunned by Spartans

Rambo

Although was hoping to end the series on an up note, it appears the actor/writer/director will just have to settle for second place.  Many had expected the fourth installment would come away with the weekend’s spoils, unfortunately the aging action hero was overpowered by a group of toga-clad warriors.

It should be said though that had an extremely narrow victory.  The spoof of 2007’s edged out the action flick by just $300,000.  But a win is still a win, right?  The satire also had the best per screen average of any movie in the Top Ten ($7104).

‘Cloverfield’ Ready for Big Box Office Debut

CloverfieldScheduled to open January 18, the big-budget thriller stands to make a killing. At least, that’s the hope. The release doesn’t have a lot of big-name stars, but teaser trailers have been running for months now and strong promotion generally creates ticket holders. Unique shooting techniques and hard-core action make Cloverfield compelling and serve to give viewers the feeling of being in the story - something that worked well for movies using similar techniques (like ).

The movie sets the stage by introducing all the characters while putting viewers right in the mix. One friend plans a journey to Japan to find his own identity and way in the world, as others make a tape for him so he can hold happy memories close. But Cloverfield is about no happy party - for soon enough, terror strikes. In this way, this film is very much like any other movie ever made.

What’s different about ? Lots of money, slick production, and in-your-face glimpses of the monster give this film a polished feel often lacking in other horror flicks. The movie strives for a natural, authentic feeling sure to keep viewers right on the edge. And the monster, it’s said, is well worth the wait.
