What’s Your Locker-Room Body Image?

Posted by Katie Gutierrez Painter Categories: Advice, Celebrities, Editorials, Entertainment, Health,
Shortly before I got married last May, my amazing mom—who knew I’d been wanting to get back in shape—gifted me 20 half-hour sessions with a personal trainer. Fast forward five months. I received a call from 24 Hour Fitness; it seemed they checked their records and I still had 18 of my 20 sessions remaining. (Oops.) Did I want to come in and use them? Damn, I thought. But my summer of blissful post-wedding eating had taken a toll—ten pounds, to be exact—on my figure. I’ve always been pretty small, so that increase made a major difference in the way my clothes fit and the way I thought about my own body. So I said grudgingly, “Okay. I’ll go in tomorrow.”
Since then, several things have happened, all amazing in their own right. (1) I weigh the exact same as I did in September… but my body fat has dropped by 6%. I’ve gone from the “Acceptable” to the “Lean” range! (2) I’ve committed to participating in a triathlon in May… How did that happen? (3) I renewed my training sessions—twice—and am now in another class three days a week to prepare for the triathlon. All in all, I’m working out seven days per week—crazy! (4) I can do awesome man-pushups, and I feel strong and powerful. (5) My skin is clearer… a happy surprise, to be sure!
Of course, to be fair, half my pants still don’t fit, and I’ve been sore every day for, oh, five months.

Family Emergency Forces Usher Cancellation

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Television,
UPDATE: Tameka reportedly went into cardiac and respiratory arrest during a liposuction procedure.
An unexpected matter forced singer Usher to cancel a performance over the weekend. But unlike in the Rihanna/Chris Brown situation, this issue was not police related.
The 30-year-old had been slated to sing at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party on Saturday evening. But after calls from both Usher and his mother, the record mogul was forced to deliver the bad news: the performance was going to be scrapped due to a “serious illness in the family.”
According to Access Hollywood, Usher’s wife, Tameka Foster, experienced complications after undergoing a plastic surgery procedure in Brazil. Although it’s not known which specific treatment the 37-year-old was supposedly seeking, Foster gave birth to their second child together back in December. Access claimed that a neurosurgeon from LA’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center was being flown to the South American country to assist.
It has been rumored that Foster will appear on the second season of The Real Housewives of Atlanta.

15 Little Ways to Live Happier and Healther—Starting NOW!

Posted by Katie Gutierrez Painter Categories: Advice, Entertainment, Fashion, Health, How To, Humor, Relationships,
It’s the tenth day of the new year, and how many of us have already strayed from our resolutions? That may be because those goals we make each December 31 often revolve around breaking bad habits or spontaneously forming new, better ones. Who among us hasn’t vowed, at least once, to eat healthier, to work out three times a week, to drink less, to read more, to be spontaneous, and so on? While these resolutions may be noble, they’re also decidedly vague. (After all, doesn’t eating only one bowl of ice cream after dinner count as “eating healthier”?) So why not give yourself a chance to actually achieve your goals by making them smaller and more realistic? Below, 15 little ways to live healthier and happier—starting now.

Patrick Swayze Hospitalized for Pneumonia

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Movies, Television,
UPDATE: Swayze is now out of the hospital and back at home.
Just days after the broadcast of his Barbara Walters interview, Patrick Swayze was unfortunately absent at a press gathering for his new show.
At today’s event before the Television Critics Association, A&E execs informed the audience that The Beast star was being treated for pneumonia. “Patrick Swayze has checked himself into the hospital. However, he asked us specifically to go forward with today’s panel. We wish him the very best with his recovery,” president Abbe Raven stated.
Swayze, 56, announced last March that he had been diagnosed with inoperable pancreatic cancer. Despite his status, the actor has already outlived many tabloid timelines and was able to complete a whole season of his new series.
The season premiere of The Beast debuts Thursday, Jan. 15 at 10 p.m. on A&E.

Health Bulletin #1: The disease that poses as a UTI—and affects more than 1 in 300 women

Posted by Katie Gutierrez Painter Categories: Advice, Editorials, Health, How To,
I’ve been thinking about the best way to start blogging about health issues that really matter to women. And I decided that, in addition to product reviews, exercise and eating advice, etc., it’d be a good idea to spend some time each week focusing on a particular health threat. Why not start with one that’s close to my heart (and bladder)?
One lovely Sunday morning about seven or eight years ago, my mom cornered me before breakfast and asked if I could have gonorrhea. I sputtered and shook, furious that my own mother could think I had an STD. I told her that I hadn’t put in the dirty work for that one, and we awkwardly moved on. But the truth is, her question was valid. For about a year, I’d been getting frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs), but as of late, every test had come back negative. No bacteria, no infection; I was fine. Fast forward four years. I had just graduated from college and reached a sulky sort of resignation that I would simply always have “my” symptoms: stinging pain when I peed, urgent/frequent urination (often with nothing to show for my effort), and pain in my bladder/pelvic region. Then my grandmother said the two magic words: interstitial cystitis.
Family Tragedy for John Travolta and Kelly Preston

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Movies,
UPDATE #2: A family source has reported that a “seizure disorder” was the cause of death.
UPDATE: You can read the statement issued by the family here.
The new year has unfortunately started off tragically for John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston.
According to Michael Ossi, a lawyer for the family, the 16-year-old son of the Hairspray star died today after suffering a seizure. The family had been at their vacation home in the Bahamas when the incident occurred.
Jett, the couple’s eldest child, had suffered from a history of seizures. His parents have stated that his developmental disability had been linked to Kawasaki disease. Coincidentally, the inflammatory disorder which can lead to heart attacks just got some media attention last week. The son of Backstreet Boys’ Brian Littrell was recently diagnosed with an atypical form of the disease. (Baylee has since been released from the hospital.)
John and Kelly, married since 1991, also have an 8-year-old daughter named Ella Bleu.

When Should We Start Worrying About Beauty?

Posted by Katie Gutierrez Painter Categories: Advice, Celebrities, Editorials, Entertainment, Fashion, Health, Parenting,
Now, clearly I love the beauty and fashion industry. I delight in it. But this wasn’t always the case. Back in high school, I was the girl who took pride in arriving to class with her hair in a messy wet bun, wearing only lip balm and a snug t-shirt with drawstring pants. Vans were my footwear staple. I considered myself independent, a little bohemian, and I looked scornfully at the girls with smoky eyes and straightened hair. There was also, I’ll admit, a little bit of envy. In their fashion, their stilettos that clacked across the beige tiled hallways, those girls had what I didn’t: sex appeal.
Last night, I watched The Devil Wears Prada with my 12-year-old stepdaughter. She is uncommonly beautiful, with no trace of the awkwardness I suffered at her age. She is smart, perceptive, and a budding fashionista. (The night before, she’d killed thirty minutes by trying on half a dozen pairs of my shoes, then texting all her friends back in Seattle about her newfound love for high-heeled boots.) But as we watched Prada, she’d declare, “Ugh! I have such a big butt!” or “Look at all this baby-flab over my hips! You don’t have any of that!” or “I’m confused. How come my thighs touch when I’m standing up? That’s not right, is it?”

Saying Good-Bye to Eartha Kitt

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Movies, Music, Television, Obituaries,

Iconic actress Eartha Kitt passed away this past Christmas Day at the age of 81. In her lifetime, she was a singer, a movie star, a famed TV villain and one of the sexiest women ever to grace the screen.
The former Catwoman suffered from colon cancer, but even in her advanced age she remained active in many film and TV projects.
Kitt’s career began on the stage in the 1940s, where she made an impression with her acting talent and strong vocals. She went on to recording and TV fame in the 1950s. She began appearing movies as early as 1948, but didn’t become a household name until she landed the role of Catwoman in TV’s Batman. Kitt played the beautiful villain in 1968, and was called the “most exciting woman in the world” by actor/director Orson Welles.
She appeared on the stage, where she got her start, as recently as 2005 in The Junfan Project. Kitt regularly voiced the character of Yzma for Disney’s The Emperor’s New School, and appeared in the 2007 movie And Then Came Love. The Tony-nominated singer is perhaps best known in the music industry for recording the Christmas hit “Santa Baby.”

Jeremy Piven Blames Sushi for Broadway Cancellation

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories:
Some celebrities blame vertigo for their absences, others chalk it up to simple “exhaustion.” But up until now, I doubt anyone has pleaded guilty to an overconsumption of sushi.
After missing several performances of Speed-the-Plow earlier this week (that’s the same play Madonna once starred in), Entourage star Jeremy Piven has abruptly left the Broadway production. A high level of mercury is apparently the reason for the Piven’s medical leave.
A twice-a-day sushi meal and a regular intake of Chinese herbs are believed to be the factors behind Jeremy’s illness. A high level of mercury can apparently lead to cause cardiac arrest, kidney failure, even psychiatric problems
After hearing skeptical comments about Jeremy’s excuse (playwright David Mamet joked that his Piven was “leaving show business to pursue a career as a thermometer”), the actor’s physician came to his defense. According to Dr. Carlon Colker, the 43-year-old had been feeling ill for some time. When Colker discovered that Piven had a mercury level “almost six times the upper limit of normal and allowable,” he warned the producers back on December 10.
