10 Reasons Why I Don’t Embrace Technology

Posted by Monica Edwards Categories: Business, Personal,

techI have a need to plead my case because a soon to be released video review of my thoughts of the paints a picture of me as someone who "hates" technology. This is not a true depiction of my feelings as I believe that "hate" is a strong word, and I try not to use it loosely. There are not many things I hate, but there are things I can do without. I also wanted to make it clear that since my husband's world revolves around the tech world, I support him in all that he does, and if not for technology, he would not have a job and we would not be so greatly blessed. But, it does not mean that I have to embrace all that comes with his choice of career. So, here are 10 reasons why I don't embrace technology wholeheartedly.

Bleeding Edge TV 154: HydraBrush Dual-Sided Electric Toothbrush

There are all sorts of high-quality electronic toothbrushes out there. HydraBrush aims to take some of the attention off of the Oral B Professionals and SoniCares of the world by combining 8 microbrushes that you actually bite into. By doing so, you get a full brushing on both sides of your teeth as well as a gum massage. Don’t mind the demo, as we were just as uncomfortable watching it in person as we are sure you are watching from the comfort of your screens. In any event, the HydraBrush is available for $109 USD.

CES 2007 Video: Digital Hero 3 Camera From GoPro

We loved the concept of the GoPro Digital Hero 3 that we saw at CES. It’s a small digital camera that straps to your wrist. It’s ultra-secure, so no worries about dropping it, and the images look fantastic. Perfect when hiking, skiing, or sporting events when you want a camera near at all times but don’t want to have to worry about putting it away and taking it out repeatedly.

CES 2007 Video: Premier Image Optics Tiny Camera Components

Andrew Lin from Premier Image Optics shows off their projectors, digital cameras, and camera phone modules. It’s really incredible how small they can get, even when you go up to 3.2MP. They say 5MP is coming soon, but Nokia already has one in their newest N95. The projectors are pretty neat, and there are some very high megapixel cameras for a point-and-shoot.

CES 2007 Video: Loc8tor Homing Device

We were able to check out the Loc8tor device at CES. This is a gadget that lets you home in on things (or people) that you have attached a small homing key to. The plus version even lets you know if a homing key moves out of your range, so you know if a kid is heading towards a street or if someone is trying to jack your gear.

CES 2007 Video: IOGEAR’s Nano Shield Technology Coated Peripherals

Keith Renty of IOGEAR gives us the low down on their Nano Shield technology. This coating lasts for a couple of years and kills all bacteria on your keyboard or mouse. This is aimed at the healthcare and education industry - but if you are a hypochondriac, it works for you as well.

CES 2007 Video: Emtrace Widgetstation, No PC Required!

We all know of and love widgets, regardless of if they are on Windows Vista, in Apple’s Dashboard, or on the web with Yahoo! or Windows Live - but so far to use widgets we have been forced to interact with them on a computer. Emtrace is currently in the final stages of developing the Emtrace Widgetstation, which offers a small widget display and interaction device that can sit anywhere in your house for ‘glance-able’ information.

The Widgetstation features 802.11 technology to enable it to update weather, sports, traffic, or photo information from the web without a computer. I know we here at Gear Live are looking forward to when the Widgetstation hits retail so we can keep track of incoming emails and IMs when not glued to our workstations. This looks to be the perfect desk or bedroom accessory for anyone looking for a quick way to keep up to date.

Currently the Widgetstation uses proprietary widget formats, however Emtrace is working on technologies to enable the Widgetstation to work with other formats of widgets from Microsoft, Apple, and others. Look for it soon in the $200 price range.

CES 2007 Video: Gadgets of the Guests

With so much focus on all of the brand new, Q2-to-come gadgetry on at , we thought we’d ask people what they were carrying, much like fashionistas ask “who are you wearing” on the red carpet. Except that the carpet wasn’t red. And no one was dressed that well. The winner was by far the sixth or seventh guy we met up with, a gentlemen whose collection of active, on and ready-to-call gadgetry would impress even the most wired techie.

CES 2007 Video: The Quik Pod Sales Pitch

Let’s admit it - we have all had to stop some stranger to ask them to take a photo of us and our friends because we weren’t in the mood to set up a tripod with self-timer. When the camera was returned smelling of hot dogs and cheap perfume, we were livid. Am I right? Understanding that, Wayne Fromm came up with the Quik Pod. Looks good in theory, but that sales pitch felt like it was straight out of a Simpsons episode. Still, we can’t argue with the practicality of the thing. Check it out in this episode.
