TBS Makes a Hit…or Mistake?
Get Smart. Indiana Jones. Re-making old classics is the latest trend on movies…so why can’t the same technique be applied to TV? I’ll admit - I’m a huge game show fan. Any game, any time, I play along and I usually do quite well. True TV game-players know where the best action can be found: GSN. But in this age of old-is-new, where past ideas are suddenly no longer passé, the classics come alive. In this case, it’s Match Game.
A show with a long history that just got a little bit longer. Match Game originally hit the air in 1962 on NBC, running for seven seasons before cancellation. This is not the most famous version of the show. Match Game didn’t hit its real stride until it found a home on CBS in 1973. The episodes have resulted in some of the most popular programming GSN has ever ran, and for good reason.
I can summon this up for you in just two words: Richard Dawson.

So how has Bravo chosen to fill their upcoming Project Runway void? By strangely choosing to expand into the kids’ market.
The cable network has just announced plans to develop a spinoff of its popular cooking show, Top Chef. Sometime in the future, followers of the channel will be assaulted with a fresh-faced version of the reality hit. With Top Chef Junior, Bravo aims to “teach and test the skills of younger aspiring chefs and appeal to the whole family.”

My Fair Lady: One Remake Over the Line?

There is a certain merit in re-introducing young generations to the classics, in keeping with the times and re-inventing the old to make it seem young and fresh again. But at some point, some where, is there a line which can be crossed? Are some things not already so perfect, so pristine and so well-done that they manage to stand the test of time? Aren’t there some things which no one could possibly ever re-create? It’s true the Sistine Chapel has looked the exact same way since 1512…yet no one could really consider re-vamping this most famous ceiling so that it has a much more modern appeal. Buckingham Palace famously houses a queen, and yet no major changes have been made to this edifice in her entire eighty-two year lifespan. Some things are made to stand alone. Just don’t try telling that to Hollywood…or lazy scriptwriters.

Sex and the City: Boom in Frame?

I sincerely hoped this issue was only present at my screening and could be blamed on a lazy projectionist not wanting to work the graveyard shift for two theaters jam-packed with estrogen - but according to my Google search, I’m afraid not.
At the midnight showing of the new Sex and the City movie at the Waterford Lakes Plaza in Orlando, FL, viewers were awed by not just the return of the Fab Four, but by several occasions of boom microphones slipping into frame during the film. At one point, Chris Noth even walks right up to what is clearly the top end of a Kino light or a flag on a C-stand.

Signs It Might Be Time for Regis Philbin to Retire

After endless hours of daytime television viewing, I have come to an unfortunate conclusion: Regis Philbin needs to start planning his retirement. (At least from non-scripted fare.)
Although I do still regularly watch Live with Regis and Kelly, Philbin’s frequent errors simply make me cringe. While he has the charm to pull some of them off, I sometimes wonder if he has any idea what he’s talking about at all. If it wasn’t for Ripa’s amazing ability to overlook senior moments, her co-host would often come off looking quite sad.

Paradise Hotel 2: Zach Wins And Shares The Ultimate Prize

I’m pretty sure the Earth just reversed it’s magnetic poles or something because somehow the trashiest reality show on television has morphed into a tarty version of Oprah’s Big Give.
On the season finale of Paradise Hotel 2, we learned which of the hotel guests won the so-called “ultimate prize”. Sit down for this one. The first shocker: it was the biggest tool from Season 1, 28-year-old personal trainer Zach. Shocker two: Zach entered this season as the least offensive and idiotic of this batch of hotel guests. (I dare say Zach actually seems smart and nearly likeable compared to the cocky, confused and verbally-challenged kid he was on Paradise Hotel 1. What a difference four years can make!) Shocker three: Zach shared his “ultimate prize” of $200,000 with Tidisha and Stephanie!

Jessica Alba Not Aiming to Be Taken Seriously

In a recent interview with Allure magazine, Jessica Alba told us why we’ll never ever take her seriously. The pregnant actress apparently doesn’t care whether we like her work; she’s just interested in our theater dollars.
When asked why she doesn’t delve much into smaller independent fare, the 27-year-old responded: “To me, box office is the most important thing. If the movie makes money, then I’m fine.”
She then went on to explain her affinity for money. “I grew up not having a lot. I’m really happy to be making money, not depending on a man, and not having to suffer to survive in this business. Struggling is not fun. Been there, done that.”

Movie-Theater Etiquette: Should You Clean Up After Yourself?

I see a lot of movies, and, if I can afford it, I’ll occasionally stop at the concessions counter for my $4 soda and $6 popped corn kernels.
In an aside, I should mention that if the current shortage of edible corn becomes reason for theaters to raise prices, I’ll spit in someone’s eye!
My inclination over the years has been to take my drink and snack into the theater, watch, eat, drink and pick up my garbage on my way out. It’s easy enough to pick up after myself, and, well, it’s my mess, right? And I used to heavily deride those that left their garbage everywhere.
However, in talking with others lately, including a former theater usher who sided with the messy people, I’ve come to understand that this practice isn’t only for—pardon my candor—jerks. Many of these garbage-scattering moviegoers have considered the morality of such an act and decided they are under no obligation to dispose of said waste. Surprisingly, their reasoning seems sound.

The Real Housewives of New York City: One Shrew Too Many or New Guilty Pleasure?

I remember once a media professor at the University of Washington asked our class the simple but loaded question: Why do you watch TV? The class’ answer seemed to boil down to two main reasons: we watch television because we aspire to be what we see or because what we see makes us feel better about our own lives.
This memory popped into my head as I watched a mini-marathon of Bravo TV’s newest ‘docu-reality’ series the The Real Housewives of New York City. What I can’t yet decide is which category of reason for watching TV this show falls into. I’m pretty sure it is the latter.
After shame watching three seasons of the The Real Housewives of Orange County, I expected the NYC ladies to be more of the same cliche of spoiled, self-indulgent, wasteful and shameless cougars albeit a bit less tan, with sleeker hair and a much less appealing accent. And while they are to an extent all of those things, much like New York City itself, these women do seem more worldly and educated than their Southern California counterparts. It is also clear that despite Bravo’s spin-off name for this show, these women are not housewives at all. In fact, it appears they spend very little time, if any, at home.
