Digital Cam Sweeps the Scenery
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Design, Misc. Tech,

We love the effect of 360º panoramic photos, but unless you are a professional that can afford the large and sometimes overpriced equipment, you just have to be content seeing the work of others’ efforts. Designer Hye-Jeong Yang has come up with the Sony Panoramic Digital Concept Camera that you set on a flat surface at the angle you want and, as it rotates, it takes in the whole view in a single image or video. You can then save it on a memory card. Still at the prototype stage, we suspect it will not be long before it comes to a retailer near you.

Sony Recalls Cybershot Casings
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Corporate News,
Sony is yet again going through another recall. It seems that the casing on some of its DCS-T5 Cybershot digital cameras might peel and/or warp creating a sharp edge. The company has offered to replace it at no charge, including shipping, for the recall of approximately 416,000 cams sold in Japan, the U.S., Europe, and China. Check the bottom of the camera if you think yours might be suspect and look for serial numbers between 3500001 and 3574100.
Sony first noticed the defect one month after its Sept. 2005 release, when 30 Japanese consumers reported small cuts and scratches. Our only question to Sony is why it took the company so long to get to a total recall of the defective parts?

NeoFace Identifies The Bad Guys
Posted by Sheila Franklin Categories: Cameras, Misc. Tech, Science,

NEC has created a GLVQ-based NeoFace biometric recognition system that can identify humans as they drive past borders. Combined with their electronic passport technology, after a camera scans a vehicle’s license plate, a combination of eye-zone extraction and facial recognition matches parts of the face. The cameras are being installed on 40 checkpoints on a new road which connects Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and will be upgraded to include 8 passengers by August.
At this point the NEC system can only make an ID on the driver, so the obvious thing to do here is if you are one of those who probably shouldn’t be traveling so publicly, you might want to hang in the back seat while watching another viewing of “The Falcon and the Snowman” on your portable DVD player.
