3G speed test: Verizon wins, AT&T dead last

No shocker here. Wired.com did their own independent tests to determine the fastest and slowest average 3G network speeds in the US, and Verizon came out on top. The survey included 15,000 participants, with 12,000 of them reporting back with data that was valid and usable for the tests. Verizon clocked in with an average download speed of 1,940 kbps, T-Mobile dropped in at second at 1,793 kbps, Sprint took third at 1,598 kbps, and AT&T was way behind at just 901 kbps. That’s just sad, and very telling when you consider the complaints from many an iPhone user as it pertains to 3G speeds.

Granted, this wasn’t the most scientific of studies, as the test included 8153 AT&T users, compared to just 856 from Verizon, but hey, the info is still useful, right?

T-Mobile myTouch Google 3G Cell Phone

T-Mobile myTouch 3G T-Mobile is already working on its next Google phone. So far a million of their G1s have sold since October. The myTouch 3G is set to debut in August. The new phone has a touchscreen but no keyboard like the G1 and will be priced at $199.00 with a 2 year contract. The software is free as Google would love to have Android for all phones. Both Verizon and Motorola seem to agree as they each have products in the works.

iPhone 3GS AT&T in-store launch details

If you are looking to pick up an iPhone 3GS from an AT&T Store tomorrow morning, you’ll want to check out the video above to details on how everything is going to flow tomorrow morning. Basically, stores open at 7:00 AM, and you’ll be able to enter first if you have a pre-ordered phone waiting for you. As soon as the pre-order line is done, you can enter to purchase an iPhone 3GS if you did not pre-order. That second line is good for both current and new AT&T customers, but if you are new, you should head to the AT&T iPhone page first so you can get through the process a bit quicker, since you’ll be pre-qualified.

Novatel MiFi gives you a personal 3G Wi-Fi hotspot

Novatel has just announced the future release of their new MiFi 3G portable hotspot, and we are officially excited. Using the MiFi, you’ll be able to grab the signal from your EV-DO Rev. A or HSPA account, and share it over Wi-Fi to a group. For example, you can hit up Starbucks with two buddies, break out the MiFi, and all three of you can hit the Internet without paying for Starbucks Wi-Fi three times. The MiFi device itself looks just as awesome as its usage scenarios, as it just as long and wide as a credit card, and isn’t really that tall. Novatel is also touting that the battery will last for 4 hours when used actively, and 40 hours when on standby. Nice.

Mark our words - we are going to be keeping an eye on the news leading up to the Novatel MiFi official release. Expect to see if available for purchase in for first half of 2009.

T-Mobile’s Motorola ZN5 Going For Free This Weekend

Remember Motorola‘s 5-megapixel ZN5 cameraphone? It seems that T-Mobile REALLY wants you to have one: they just announced that beginning on Black Friday and going through Sunday they’ll be offering a $100 mail-in rebate on the $99 phone (with a two-year contract). Free is an amazing price considering you’re getting a 5-megapixel autofocus quad-band phone which includes a xenon flash and WiFi capability. We’re pretty sure these guys will fly off the shelves – at least for one weekend.

800MHz P565 Handset Coming Soon From ASUS

ASUS announced that they would soon be releasing a smartphone with a touch interface and a whopping 800MHz of processing goodness. ASUS is featuring a new touch interface they have named “Glide,” which overlays the Windows Mobile operating system. The P565 features not only speed, but a 2.8-inch VGA touch screen with a resolution of 480 x 640. The face is what you would expect for a touchscreen device, but what you cannot see is the leather that lines the back of the device, clearly aiming it for a business environment. The P565 incorporates Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, GPS, 256MB of flash, with 128MB DDR SDRAM, an SD slot, Blutooth, a 3 megapixel camera, and supports HSDPA 3.6Mbps, UMTS 2100, EDGE/GPRS/GSM 900/1800/1900, Class 10. No word yet on price or when it will launch, but it certainly should be a very capable device once it comes to market.

Zeebo Makes Its Way Into 3G Wireless Gaming

Tectoy Zeebo Game System The Zeebo from Tectoy is aiming to make its way into the very difficult video game market. The one advantage they have is they are using a 3G wireless network at no cost to the user. The Zeebo is launching in July of 2009 in Brazil and will then branch out to other markets in developing countries. The console will be always connected to a 3G network, allowing games and content download. The system comes with 3 games pre-loaded, Action Hero 3D, Evil Prey, and Quake. Although not the greatest titles of today, they obviously are not competing with the traditional market, but the $258 price tag certainly does. The games will cost between $10 and $30, but there is no note of supporting developers or any other titles in the works. The Zeebo features an ARM 528MHz CPU, Qualcomm Adreno 130 graphics, 1GB NAND flash memory, 160MB RAM, 128MB DDR SDRAM and 32MB stacked DDR SDRAM. The 3G wireless portion of the Zeebo would be a great concept to see in the U.S on the next generation of consoles if only the carriers would allow it, but we doubt it.

AT&T says iPhone 3G tethering coming “soon”

iPhone 3G tethering Now that’s what we’re talking about! AT&T Movility President Ralph De La Vega just dropped the official word that the iPhone will be gaining the ability to be wirelessly tethered to notebooks, giving you 3G internet access on your laptop wherever your iPhone has a 3G signal. Just about every other smartphone that is the caliber of the iPhone has this ability, so it’s been a long time coming. No definite date given or anything, but at least now we know that iPhone tethering is on the horizon.

Motorola ZINE ZN5 Camera Phone Available Today

Motorola‘s 5-megapixel ZN5 cameraphone arrived online and in select corporate T-Mobile stores this morning. Unlike most camera phone’s, the quad-band ZN5 takes high resolution photos using Kodak Imaging Technology – including autofocus, low-light optimization, and a real Xenon flash. Once you’ve snapped a picture, it can be instantly sent via MMS, WiFi or Bluetooth – or you can store it on 350MB of internal memory which is expandable up to 4GB via microSD.

With a price as low as $99 with a 2-year contract, we think this will be a popular new choice; however, the phone lacks support for T-Mobile’s new 3G network, opting instead for EDGE, which will certainly make some think twice before signing up.
