Unreal Tournament UnrealArt

Unrealart is a project developed by artist Alison Mealey.  The images in the project are composed from information collected over the course of one 30-minute game each.  Each game has 20-25 AI bots fighting in slightly user-influenced patterns on artist-created maps.  The position of each bot is logged every second along with points of death and lines of movement.  The data is put through Mealey’s custom code and outputs as the beautiful artwork you see above.  There are many more examples on her website, each wonderful proof of what beauty is possible through such creative collaboration.  Mealey’s art goes on live display at the CoEDD graduate exhibition in Huddersfield in the UK on August 13th.

Heretic on DSThe Nintendo DS homebrew market is starting to heat up and some brilliant hackers over at Drunken Coders have managed to port Raven’s 1994 classic FPS Heretic to the DS - they even manage to take advantage of the second screen to display in game maps. I’m not sure how many of you guys have played Heretic but it was easily one of the better games of it’s era - it had great graphics, fun gameplay, and (for the time) a very involving story-line. I know the Nintendo DS lacks some of the “cool factor” that the PSP has, but as more and more cool retro homebrew projects pop up I get more and more tempted to get one - I could spend hours going through Heretic again!

Google Maps Nintendo DSA devoted Nintendo DS hacker, Alexei Karpenko, has managed to rig up a Lassen iQ module to the handheld system, transforming the top screen into a GPS system.  Downloading information from Google Maps, the FrankenDS also requires use of the Game Boy Movie Player and a Compact Flash card to hold the necessary data. While portability issues may keep my colleague Edwin from using this in court anytime soon, the GPS interface is just one of Karpenko’s innovative uses for his homemade DS serial connector, the PassMe.

PSPMany have heard of the awesome new PSP 2.0 firmware upgrade, and are wanting to make the jump. In the US, you have to go through a couple of extra hoops if you want to accomplish this task. Fear not, thanks to this nice step-by-step tutorial. A word of caution: this update is not intended for US PSPs and thusly will not be supported by Sony. Also, if you do decide to do the update, you cannot downgrade to the current firmware release. This means no more emulators, but cool new features such as web browsing. Check it out and let us know how it went.

MarioMyfanwy Ashmore, a conceptual artist, has unveiled a ROM version of the original Super Mario Brothers for NES with almost everything removed - including enemies, structures, and power-ups.  Basically what this means is that, as Ashmore describes it, “all you can do is go for a walk.”  This idea of a “walk” might be so foreign to the average gamer that the download site even includes directions on the ultra-limited controls, presumably to make it clear that nothing else is possible.

Perhaps it’s the pure manic nature of such outrageous reductionism, but the idea of this game seems very intriguing.  As a parody of the current trend toward open-ended environments in videogame design, it really is pure genius.  Make sure to notice the mention of Ashmore’s previous piece on the download site, a controversial project involving two-way communication between a viewer and a network of decaying grapefruits.

Grand Theft Auto: SA Remember when Hot Coffee was something you drank to wake up? Now it’s the latest controversy sparked from Rockstar’s latest Grand Theft Auto game, San Andreas. Many people are calling for regulation and are crying in outrage for scenes they claim as pornographic – while you can see more action on cable TV. Recently Rockstar has denied that the mini-game is “locked” in the original game – stating that the hackers went to great lengths so as to generate this mini-game. Now that claim has been challenged with the release of the “Hot Coffee” cheat for the PS2 version of the game. This would mean that the mini game code was in fact coded by Rockstar and “locked” – in the form of an easter egg. Tor Thorsen from Gamespot set out to do some investigative reporting to find out if indeed this cheat existed for the PS2 original version of the game. After many long hours doing all the cheat code entering, putting in the manual work of the dating missions, he was finally able to experience the mini game on the PS2. His findings pose some interesting questions: why is Rockstar lying? Who really put in this mini game in GTA: SA? Why are activists having a frenzy about this while public television gets away with much more explicit images for virtually no work at all?

Banned!Cheating and mods on multiplayer online enabled games are nothing new to the PC realm of online gaming; however, they are not one in the same to Xbox Live. When playing online multiplayer games on the PC, a host acts as a moderator to the games and is able to kick out anyone he or she sees that are cheating or using a mods in such a way as to give them an advantage over the rest of the players. Xbox Live, however, does not work in that fashion – that luxury is only limited to custom game types. Xbox Live’s, or XBL for short, greatest strength is also its greatest downfall when it comes to cheating and mod use.
