MistyNo clever gadget here, folks, but having recently lost our own dog to liver malfunction, it makes us question why such supposedly reliable and technologically up-to-date companies as Iams and Science Diet may be responsible for the lives of too many pets worldwide. These products are often recommended by vets, and if you can’t rely on them, what can you do?

Our suggestion is, first of all, to halt the consuming of either wet or dry recalled products in question, which now includes Del Monte (manufacturers of Gravy Train and jerky treats,) Purina’s Alpo, and Hill. Switch your pet’s diet to something organic and made locally or make your own kibble. Finally, if you even suspect your best friend is exhibiting symptoms of liver damage, call your local veterinary facility to see if she/he should be tested.

Hooded Toaster

Consider no longer having to deal with excess crumbs, burnt Pop-Tarts, partially-frozen waffles, or oversized bagels stuck in your toaster. Alas, it is still only a dream. Designed by Turkey’s Atil Kizilbayir, this ingenious device won the recent 2007 Immib Product Design competition. Put your bread in it at one end and a few seconds later the carriage pops not up, but out of the hooded toaster. Props to Atil, and here’s hoping that his concept will become reality in the near future.

RelaxOneRelaxOne

The Swiss company Medirelax has created a chair that is based on “the recognition and the respect of human physiological proportions.” They feel that the design will help you achieve holistic relaxation by taking a break from the world for 10 to 20 minutes, cocooning yourself inside, and playing the RelaxOne’s specially composed music. It’s designed to soothe your entire body by Psychoacoustic Stimulation, which creates sound frequencies that are similar to those sent out by your brain.

We think that’s a trifle spooky, and are wondering what would happen if we assumed the required position and let the RelaxOne work on the rest of our bodies while we kept our ears still connected to our iPods. Contact medirelax for a price which just may cost you a very stiff arm and a leg.

SolCool One MillenniaWith all the emphasis lately on “going green” and energy-efficiency, we love this forward-thinking company and it’s new air conditioner. It’s the Millennia version 4 from SolCool One, a “hybrid” air conditioner that can cool a large room using solar panels, a wall socket, or even batteries for when the sun takes a vacation day. Because the system utilizes a maximum of 500 watts, the Millennia significantly lowers your electric bill—regardless of the power source (the batteries can run the device up to 24 hours). In addition, the Millennia can also heat up a room, purify water and even run other appliances. It is foreseen that if solar-powered air conditioners catch on in homes and buildings, the risk of blackouts in the summertime would be greatly reduced. The SolCool Millennia version 4 will be available in Mid-April for between $2000 and $3000 USD, plus installation, with benefits that far outweigh the costs.

Rotten TomatoA University of South Carolina research team is currently developing a disposable dipstick to detect spoiled food. Taking less than 5 minutes, the stick changes from dark purple to red to indicate food that is in the process of spoiling, while yellow means that the food is completely decayed. The team exhibited their test findings at the recent 233rd National American Chemical Society meeting. We can’t wait until we get one of our own so that we can test that weird brown stuff that has been lurking at the back of our fridge since New Year’s.

Bush Countdown Keychain

Waiting to see who our next President will be? Keep track of the day of reckoning with the Bush Countdown Keychain that clocks Dubya’s remaining term by tenths of a second. When January 20th, 2009 arrives and the countdown hits zero, liberals can breath a sigh of relief, while conservative types can start to fear the future of the U.S. Available at Stupid, the keychain is available for $9.99, a price low enough for anyone to contribute to their individual allotment of the national deficit, which experts estimate to be ~$29,341.20.

SA Table

If you delight in Swiss Army products, you will no doubt enjoy the capabilities of the SA Table. It contains an ashtray, light, fruit bowl or toy box, mirror, tissue box, and stationary set. You only have to spin the disk at the edge of the furniture to come up with any one of these options. We are thinking that this would make a great table for partying, in case you have the munchies or are a little too blitzed to get up to turn on a light to play Jenga.

foldschool furnitureFoldschool has come out with several products that will cost you absolutely nothing, zero, zip. Their philosophy is “to restore design to one of its original missions: to provide a product at an affordable price through a smart manufacturing process.” They provide downloadable patterns for any printers that you simply attatch to cardboard and assemble. If your kids are a bit rough on the furniture, be grateful that you can recycle the first one and assemble another for the same cost of $00.00. We suggest you thank foldschool very nicely and if it works for you, make a small donation to keep the site up and running.

DescriptionIt’s not as inventive at the Beer-tossing Fridge, but you Simpson fans should dig it. Put the 26 cm talking Homer Fridge Magnet up and be harassed with every Duff you open. He issues such creative comments as:

“Hey, excuse me, but I’ve noticed you’ve fallen behind in your drinking.”
“That better not be the last one ‘cos I’m still thirsty!”
“Hey buddy…mind if I lick that cap?”

We’re surprised that it doesn’t also say, “Don’t forget that the ‘Simpsons Movie’ will be out this summer.” Homer’s head is available online at Gadgets.dk for DKK 259,000 (~US $46.00.)
