Assassins Creed

1up is reporting that the October issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly will officially confirm that Ubisoft’s next-generation action game, Assassin’s Creed, will be coming to the Xbox 360. The post on 1up indicates that word from Ubisoft’s PR will come soon to fill gamers in on all the details. The latest issue of the UK’s 360 Magazine also features Assassin’s Creed on the cover. The story behind the game’s exclusivity, or lack thereof, has been curious. Ubisoft has been very evasive about confirming the title for platforms other than the Playstation 3, but now in the past couple of days, the game gets announced for both the PC and the Xbox 360. It is possible that Ubisoft might have been negotiating exclusivity with Sony and things fell through. It is also possible that the title was never intended to be exclusive and Ubisoft had other motives in keeping the other versions secret until now.

Assassins Creed

Xbox 360 owners have been upturning stones all over the Internet trying to get confirmation that Ubisoft’s upcoming action game, Assassin’s Creed would no longer be a Playstation 3 exclusive and would turn up on Microsoft’s console. Ubisoft confirmed to Gamespot that the game would be multi-platform: Assassin’s Creed would be released for the PC some time after the release of the Playstation 3 version. Those seeking confirmation of an Xbox 360 release will have to keep looking. A PC version is nice, but is not really what gamers are looking for.

Red SteelGood news for all those worried about the fate of the Wii’s premiere first-person shooter. Reports are coming in that Red Steel by Ubisoft will feature motion-matching controls using the Wiimote (i.e., the sword-play on-screen will match your Wiimote movements) which is exactly what most gamers were hoping. The main question remaining, of course, is how Ubisoft translates sword collisions from the screen to the gamer.

The reports come from a roundabout source… the user Mordrag on an IGN message board submitted some questions for German gaming site Nintendo LAN to ask. Nintendo LAN then supposedly asked the questions to Ubisoft, and their responses were translated back into English by Mordrag for readers of the IGN boards. Phew.

In his translation, Mordrag notes that Ubisoft also stated that there would be NO load times in Red Steel thanks to “smart streaming technology”. See after the jump for the full conversation!

Xbox 360 Sales ChartTodd Bishop at the Seattle Post Intelligencer has pulled together some interesting data about how the Xbox 360 has impacted video game console sales. By pulling together publicly available data for a few of the largest game publishers, one can get an idea of how the Xbox 360 market is shaping up. This isn’t going to be perfect because first party sales figures aren’t going to be reported and there are many other game publishers that aren’t represented on the list. Also, because not every title released on the Xbox is available on the Xbox 360 and vice versa, there are going to be some gaps in reporting in this area as well. But this does give a really high level view of the console market, and how marketshare is shaping up.

Over the first nine months, it appears that most of the Xbox 360 marketshare is coming at the expense of owners of the original Xbox. A small percentage of Playstation 2 sales appear to have shifted to the Xbox 360, but overall, the console still remains the dominant force on the market. Gamecube sales dropped off, but this may have had more to with the fact that fewer titles are being released on the Gamecube than on the other platforms. Total sales of game titles released for either the Xbox or the Xbox 360 grew year over year, but this may be in part to the 20% premium that Xbox 360 titles claim over their counterparts.

Despite all of the limitations of the data pulled, this gives a really interesting look into which consumers are pursuing platforms. With the Playstation 3 and the Wii releases coming up, one wonders how much brand loyalty is going to play into the success of the next generation.

DescriptionMany Bothans died to bring you this game - just in time for Christmas (Dec 2006), Ubisoft will be releasing Star Wars: Lethal Allaiance. Taking place between the two trilogies, you’ll be playing as Twi’Lek Rianna Saren and her ‘droid in a mission to find the plans for the Empire’s secret weapon, the Death Star. The release states:

Ubisoft is honored to announce this exciting and innovative Star Wars game, the first original game in the legendary franchise built to take full advantage of the unique capabilities of both the PSP system and the DS.

Translation: It’ll be 3D, just expect more refined graphics for the PSP and some touch-screen control mechanics for the DS.

This marks Ubisoft’s third Star Wars outing - Revenge of the Sith for the GBA and DS and Apprentice of the Force for the GBA being their previous releases. Given the recent success Ubisoft has had in the platforming genre with games like the Prince of Persia trilogy, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for some solid Force-based action.

King KongThe larger than life movie King Kong has some competition from its video game title, Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie. King Kong dominated the nominations for the first Canadian Awards for the Electronic and Animated Arts (CAEA), garnering nods in 7 of the 12 categories for video games. (In all, there are 37 awards categories.) Ubisoft’s Montreal studios produced the Xbox 360 version of King Kong. Nominations for the CAEA were announced Wednesday. The awards ceremony will be held Sept. 14 at the flashy River Rock Casino, in Montreal. William Shatner will host the ceremony, which will be open to the public.

Prince of Persia Original ScreenLate last week some rumors were running around that the much-lauded Prince of Persia series would be making it to the Nintendo Wii. Other than the fact that this goes against Ubisoft’s earlier statements that The Two Thrones completed the PoP trilogy, the rumor made a lot of sense, as Ubisoft has proven to be the Wii’s most staunch 3rd-party supporter.

Well, the news is a rumor no longer - today on IGN.com a spokesperson for Ubisoft replied:

“I can confirm that a game based on the popular Prince of Persia franchise is one of many titles Ubisoft has in development for Nintendo’s Wii… At this time we can not provide an official date for the game or any additional information about it.”

... and that’s all we have to go off of for now. Given how much Ubisoft is enamored with Nintendo’s Wiimote, it seems a given that the game will use this control scheme. We’ll probably have to wait a good while, though, before we find out exactly how Ubisoft plans to implement the controller for this franchise.

DescriptionLet’s just get straight to the point: Ubisoft today announced that they have been developing seven Wii games which will be available at launch for the console. The titles are:

  • Red Steel (previously announced)
  • Rayman: Raving Rabbids (previously announced)
  • Far Cry
  • Blazing Angels
  • Open Season
  • Monster 4x4: World Circuit
  • GT Pro Series

A huge surprise (outside of the fact that Ubisoft somehow found a way to keep 5 launch titles for the Wii secret until now) is the addition of Far Cry, a FPS which garnered a lot of praise for its stunning graphics and would seem to run counter to Nintendo’s philosophy of de-emphasising graphical power. It should be a real test of what exactly the Wii can do, given that Far Cry is fairly taxing for even high-end PCs and the Xbox.

In one last piece of news, Ubisoft also announced that they will be releasing “an accessory in GT Pro Series that will make this game a must have”. Hmmm…. Wii steering wheel anyone?
