Bravia W44S

Sony Ericsson has come up with a new concept in phones, the Bravia W44S, which opens both vertically and horizontally. It can handle digital audio on its dual 16mm stereo speakers, video reception on a 240 x 432mm screen, CDMA EVDO, a 3.2 MP camera with auto-focus, a 128 voice polyphonic ringtone, and a MS pro duo slot built-in for 115 Mb flash.

We admit that the W44S looks pretty nifty with its moon phases calendar/clock, but since it’s only available in Japan for now, we’ll just consider it another teaser from Sony Ericsson and hang on to our merely vertical cell phones.

Celestron VistaPix

Celestron has brought what it describes as a “new generation in imaging optics” to the CES 2007. Its VistaPix IS70 Imaging Spotter and camera has a 70mm spotting scope and 14x magnification. At a weight of 3.5 lbs., it utilizes 2 AA batteries (not included,) and features a 2-inch LCD screen, a 6x zoom, a focus meter, and video capability. The VistaPix comes with a rotatable tripod adapter, a video cable for viewing images on your NTSC or PAL TV, an aluminum case, a shutter cable, 3 lens caps, and a 2-year warranty at a whopping MSRP of $479.00.

Gorillapod

One of the more ingenious accessories displayed at the CES is the compact, lightweight, portable Gorillapod. This tripod, made by Joby, has 360º flexible joints so that you can bend or wrap it around a tree and grippable rings and feet, so that it will stay still while you are waiting for your camera’s timer to go off. At a weight of 1.6 oz and a size of 5.9 x 1.2 x 1.2-inches, it will support any point-and-shoot compact camera that weighs up to about 9.7 oz. Available at Joby for only $21.95, we’re thinking that maybe they should have named this tripod a Monkeypod, because its big brother SLR is also available at $39.95 and will hold up a 1.75 lb. video camera.

JVC HD Everio

JVC has just given out the details on their HD Everio camcorder. Recording at a full 1920 x 1080i resolution, the GZ-HD7 Everio outputs at a full 1:1 pixel ratio to high definition displays, which in turn results in an even higher quality image. The camera also features three 1/5-inch CCDs, USB 2.0, iLink / FireWire / IEEE 1394, and HDMI. Everios are also known for their built-in hard drives, allowing for tapeless recording. This one doesn’t disappoint, as it includes a 60 GB hard drive - not a ton of storage for recording 1080i video, but definitely enough for the average consumer/prosumer. This all comes to you at the price of $1,799.95 USD, and is scheduled for an April 2007 release.

UPDATE: Check out our video look at the JVC Everio GZ-HD7.

Silverfish

Another reddot award of note went to the design of the Silverfish, a cover that is designed to house about 100 different camcorder models. The Silverfish was created by hydro-forming, “a process in which water under high pressure distends a steel tube and presses its surface against the insides of a mold, so that its geometry is precisely depicted,” according to creators RWE Mechatronics.

The housing is made of sea water-resistant steel, is buoyancy-neutral, connects with a simple tripod screw, and weighs about 32 oz. With magnetic buttons, the Silverfish will work easily for any wannabe Jacques Cousteau even if he/she is wearing gloves. Visit their site for price and availability.

Visteon RechargerPrimarily known for providing various products to car manufacturers, Visteon has now ventured into the realm of car accessories. The in-vehicle wireless gadget sits in your cupholder, plugs into your car lighter socket, and can charge MP3 players, PDAs, cell phones, and digital cameras. It also contains an AI that can determine if the object to be charged is in close proximity and if it can be charged.

The device will be officially featured at next week’s CES 2007 where it has already received Design and Engineering honors. With the recent glut of cupholder products, we may get a bigger car just for all the new accessories.

TMX Elmo

Toys ‘R Us has announced that it will be receiving 13,000+ PS3s, 6,000+ Wiis and accessories, and 65,000+ TMX Elmos for these last days of holiday shopping. They also promise more items in demand such as GameBoy Advance and Fisher Price digital cameras. Not to be found online, you will have to hotfoot it to your nearest location to see if they are keeping to their word. Rather than participate in the possibly physical conflict over trying to grab the last Elmo from another customer, we think we will just watch the demo of the hysterical red creature again and wonder what the fuss is all about.
