A Headless Robot Just Ran Faster Than Usain Bolt, Then Drove Straight Into a Wall


A white, headless robot called Tiangong Ultra ran 100 meters in 9.39 seconds on Saturday. Usain Bolt's world record, set in Berlin in 2009, is 9.58. So the machine won.

Then it failed to stop, veered hard to one side, and plowed into a padded wall while spectators moved out of the way. The second-place finisher, Honor's Lightning, crossed at 9.47 seconds, also under Bolt's mark, then lost control completely and had to be carried off on a stretcher. That combination, world-class speed followed by an inability to decelerate, is the entire state of humanoid robotics in one race.


The numbers

Tiangong Ultra, built by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, averaged roughly 23.83 mph over the distance. Bolt averaged 23.35. Honor says Lightning hit 9.32 seconds in a preparatory test run, with a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second.

The context that matters more than the record itself: last year, at the first edition of these games, Tiangong Ultra won the same event in 21.50 seconds. The winning time fell by more than half in twelve months. Lightning's engineers also lengthened its legs by 10 centimeters, to 1.05 meters, ahead of this year's competition, which tells you how much of this progress is software and how much is simply building a better sprinter.

What else happened in Beijing

Tiangong Ultra came back Sunday and ran 400 meters in 38.15 seconds, taking nearly five seconds off the human world record. Lightning won the humanoid half-marathon in 50 minutes and 26 seconds, which Reuters notes beats the pace of the elite men's human world record.

The games run 51 events over five days, with more than 2,000 robots from over 660 teams across 16 countries. Beyond athletics there is football, boxing, dancing, tai chi, and industrial task challenges covering warehouse logistics, cable connections, material handling, and emergency response. Organizers say more than 40 percent of the competitions require the robots to operate autonomously.

Those task events are the ones that actually matter, and they went about how you would expect. A toddler-sized robot booted a football clean over the barrier. A boxing humanoid stumbled sideways, folded over the ropes, and lay motionless until operators carried it away.

How much this actually proves

It is easy to be cynical about a robot running in a straight line. It is also worth remembering that bipedal locomotion at speed is genuinely hard engineering. Wheels are easy. Four legs are manageable. Two legs balancing a top-heavy body at 38 kph is a control problem researchers have been chipping away at for decades.

What the crashes expose is that acceleration was never the hard part. Control is: stopping, changing direction, recovering balance under load. A robot that can sprint but cannot stop is a long way from carrying a box across a warehouse floor.

The bigger picture

China named humanoid robotics a strategic industry back in 2023, and state media splashed these results everywhere for a reason. The U.S. moved the other direction in July, announcing restrictions on imports of foreign-made humanoid and quadruped robots on national and cybersecurity grounds.

A 72-year-old Beijing spectator gave AFP the most useful frame on all of it. She pays aides weekly to clean her home and cook her meals, and she pointed out that a speed contest is not a test of intelligence. She is right. The 100 meters is the benchmark that photographs well. The warehouse logistics event is the one to watch next year.
