Kindle Encourages Bloggers to Join Subscription Service

Amazon has unveiled its new beta program that will pay bloggers for turning them into Kindle subscriptions. Although it already offers many of them, the company wants to move the content to the home screen. Subscriptions will run from $.99 to $2.00 per month. Bloggers don’t pay any fees, but Amazon sets the price as well as keeping 70% of the price. Still, if you want new readers and pocket change, this might be an option for your blog.

While most discs can hold about 5GB data now, researchers from the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia have created five dimensional discs that can hold 2,000 times that amount. The team created the 10TB disc with a color dimension that uses nanoparticles that react to light according to shape, so that information can be recorded on different wavelengths. Polarization was also applied for recording layers of data. While there are still issues to work out, they foresee the discs in the market in the next 5 to 10 years. That will give us all time to save up the money to buy that much data in one disc.

Another ebook has hit the market named the COOL-ER that uses E-InkR. This new technology produces a paperlike display that is meant to make you feel more like you are reading a book. Power is only used for “page turning,” so a single charge is good for up to 8,000 pages. The COOL-ER lets you change the text size, has PDF support and an SD card reader, all at a price of $249.00. Less expensive initially, downloads may cost you more than those for the Kindle.

Researchers Use Ionic Cooling for Laptops

Although Sharper Image and its Ionic Breeze purifier went belly up, Tessera and researchers from the University of Washington have teamed to adapt ionic cooling in a smaller form for laptops and other electronics. Supposedly the technology can extract about 30% more heat than a traditional fan at about half the power. Washington U’s Alexander Mamishev originally conducted research in 2006 before Tessera licensed it. And while the lifespan is not yet up to the 30,000 hours of life target, we may see it come to market next year.

Nokia Pulse Projector

Miika Mahonen has designed the Nokia Pulse Projector that combines an LED projector and an NXT speaker with Dolby Sound. Relying on Pulse software and Bluetooth connectivity, it can be paired up with a cell phone. The prototype is given specifications of a resolution of 1,280 x 768, a contrast ratio of 1,500:1 and 1,000 lumens brightness. The projector can send images of 15 to 60-inches from up to about 7 1/2 feet away.
