Britney’s Album Set to Flop?

Britney Spears is facing embarrassment over sales of her new album.

According to early figures, Britney Jean, the singer's eighth studio album shifted just 6,400 copies on its first day of release, including pre-orders. The record, which features her single "Work B*tch," is currently at number 14 in the UK Album Chart and was released on Monday after being streamed on iTunes for a week for fans.

Critics have described the songs as "disappointing," but the 32-year-old singer said she is proud of the effort. In an open letter on her website, she said, "I poured my heart and soul into this album. I know I keep telling you it is my most personal record yet, but it's true and I'm really proud of that. I have been through a lot in the past few years and it has really inspired me to dig deeper and write songs that I think everyone can relate to."

The pop star, who will start her Las Vegas residency at Planet Hollywood this month, sold more than 30 million copies worldwide of her debut record Baby One More Time, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Britney Spears believes her Las Vegas residency is "ideal" as she won't have to travel too much.

The "Work Bitch" hitmaker is set to launch Britney: Piece of Me at Planet Hollywood next month, and she is looking forward to the short commute between her home in Los Angeles and Sin City after three "grueling" years of touring:

"I've done two tours in two years in the past three years and it's so grueling, being on the road and staying in a different bed every night. The schedule is insane. I thought it would be ideal to have one place I could go to and I could just travel back and forth to my home after the show. It's going to be different but I'm excited."

The 31-year-old star - who has sons Sean Preston, eight, and Jayden James, seven, with ex-husband Kevin Federline - also opened up about writing her new album, Britney Jean, which she says was like "therapy." Britney admits to feeling "reclusive" at times and having "harder" days in her life, but writing her eighth studio album sparked her creativity.

Britney Duets with Sister Jamie Lynn

Britney Spears duets with her sister Jamie Lynn on her new album.

The "Work Bitch" singer worked with her 22-year-old younger sibling on the song "Chillin' With You," which features on her eighth studio record, Britney Jean.

The 31-year-old star has revealed the tracklist of 14 songs which will be included on the album, which is set for release on December 3.

She also collaborates with will.i.am on the song "It Should Be Easy," following their number one hit "Scream and Shout" in 2012. The Black Eyed Peas star recently said Britney's eagerly-anticipated new album is "one of her best."

Other songs on the record include "Alien," "Body Ache" and the lead single "Work Bitch."

Britney Spears treated her fans today with the album cover for her upcoming eighth record, Britney Jean. In a handwritten note posted on her website, the pop star claimed that her new album is "my most personal record yet… I want to show you the different sides of Britney Spears. I am a performer. I am a Mom. I am funny. I am your friend! I am Britney Jean."

The cover art features a neon design of the title atop a black and white photo of a topless Spears. While her previous album covers never strayed too far from showcasing the singer's face, this is definitely one of the more simplistic ones - perhaps in a bid to reflect the content in this record.

Britney Jean is set to be released on December 3.
