‘The Great Gatsby’ Kicks Off Cannes Film Festival

The Great Gatsby opened the Cannes Film Festival last night.
Several stars from the film including Leonardo DiCaprio - who plays main character Jay Gatsby - Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Amitabh Bachchan took to the red carpet in the rain for the premiere of Baz Luhrmann's drama movie to launch the 66th annual film gala.
DiCaprio looked dapper in a smart black suit and admitted taking on the lead role in the motion picture - which is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's popular novel - carried "enormous pressure." He told BBC News, "What is so great about this novel and why people still discuss it nearly 100 years later and still have arguments about the meaning of each sentence and each word and each bit of symbolism, is because it's left up to the interpretation of you as a reader. In a way it's a recipe for disaster because so many people are going to say, 'That's not how I felt Daisy should be or how Gatsby should be.' I just looked at it as an incredible character to take on, something that was subtle in its approach but had so much depth and meaning in every single line."

Christmas brings joy to many -- even moreso for fans of Quentin Tarantino, whose latest film Django Unchained is set to debut on the winter holiday. After viewing the film's second trailer (seen above), however, I can't say that I'm as excited as I typically find myself with a Tarantino release.
It could be that I just don't buy Leonardo DiCaprio as a villainous, eyeliner-sporting slave owner? Or perhaps it's the intended-to-be-humorous quips from Christoph Waltz and Jonah Hill that didn't impress me? Check out the trailer and let me know what you think!

Kristen Stewart For Akira Role?

Kristen Stewart has been approached to take on the main female role in the reimagining of Akira.
The live-action adaptation of the iconic magna comic is set to start shooting in March following a script rewrite by Steve Kloves, and bosses have offered the Twilight: Saga beauty the part of Kei, a young medium who becomes the love interest for the main character, teen biker gang member Kaneda.
The original story - focusing on Kaneda and his friend Tetsuo (who has yet to be cast) - was set in post-nuclear war Tokyo in 2019, while the new movie is expected to take place in New York. Andrew Garfield, James McAvoy and Kristen's boyfriend and Twilight: Saga co-star Robert Pattinson have all been approached for the role of Tetsuo - who is saved from a medical experiment by his friend.
Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company is working on the $300 million project for Warner Brothers with Allen and Albert Hughes directing. The intention is to make two films, each covering three books in the six-part series. An animated version of Akira has already been made, released in Japan in 1988.

The Great Gatsby … in 3D?

Now it’s just getting ridiculous.
The oft-adapted F. Scott Fitzgerald book The Great Gatsby is coming back to the big screen . . . and Leonardo DiCaprio is going to be in 3D.
The new film, which co-stars Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan (she reportedly beat out Blake Lively, Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley for the role of Daisy Buchanan), is one of many in a long line of adaptations.
The Great Gatsby was formerly a movie in 1926, 1949, 1974, 2000 and 2002 (if you want to count the loosely-adapted G). Set in the early 1920s, the story revolves around recent Yale graduate Nick Carraway (Maguire), who becomes the next-door-neighbor to the very wealthy Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio).
And, it’s going to be in 3D. The 3D treatment is fine for your effects-driven action films and kid-friendly comedies, but a dramatic period piece based on famous literature? We’re trying hard to reserve judgment -- after all, Leo DiCaprio is in the lead.

Baz Luhrmann to Shoot Great Gatsby in 3-D?

Baz Luhrmann is thinking about shooting The Great Gatsby in 3-D.
The Australian director - who is known for theatrical films such as Moulin Rouge - said he has "workshopped" the idea to bring F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel to life in multiple dimensions.
He revealed the possible plan while speaking in Las Vegas about technology in film at the Consumer Electronics Show alongside fellow directors Michael Mann and Oliver Stone. Baz's version of the The Great Gatsby is set to star Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. At the show he admitted he wasn't surprised that there some scepticism about the widespread adoption of 3-D, as it was first used with "gags" before moving on to "spectacle and drama" in Avatar - but said he thinks it can be used in "poetic cinema" - films similar to his adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.

Mia Wasikowska Ranks High on Forbes’ Highest-Grosser List

Kids are All Right star Mia Wasikowska did more than all right in 2010.
Thanks to her breakout role in Alice in Wonderland, the actress with the hard-to-spell last name managed to land on one of Forbes’ year-end lists.
Mia tied with Johnny Depp for second place on the magazine’s "Hollywood's Highest-Grossing Actors" chart. Both Alice actors saw their respective film(s) ring up approximately $1.03 billion in total.
Leonardo DiCaprio – with help from Shutter Island and Inception – placed first with $1.1 billion.

Armie Hammer Cast as Leonardo DiCaprio’s Love Interest

Fans of The Social Network may recognize Armie Hammer as the Winklevoss twins, but his next role is sure to prompt even more Facebook buzz.
Hammer has just signed on to play opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar Hoover biopic. While a source says there are “no bedroom scenes,” DiCaprio and Hammer will share at least one on-screen kiss in J. Edgar.
Armie plays Clyde Tolson, an associate director of the FBI. Like Hoover, Tolson is buried in D.C.’s Congressional Cemetery.
A rumored cross-dresser, Hoover has often been the source of speculation among historians.
