BREAKING NEWS: Heath Ledger Found Dead

On a day when Hollywood should be celebrating movies, actors are instead mourning the loss of one of their own.

Actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in New York by his housekeeper.  The star in this year’s The Dark Knight was only 28.  While no official cause of death has been released, it appears it may have been drug-related.

Ledger, a Best Actor nominee for 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, leaves behind a 2-year-old daughter.  Matilda’s mother, actress Michelle Williams, met Heath in 2004 on the set of their Oscar-nominated movie.  Although it was often rumored the two were married, the couple parted ways last September.  Prior to Williams, Ledger had been in an on-and-off relationship with another former co-star, Naomi Watts.

In addition to this year’s Batman sequel, Ledger’s work can currently be seen in I’m Not There (co-starring recent nominee Cate Blanchett).

Mel Gibson - Heath’s co-star in 2000’s The Patriot - just released this statement to Entertainment Tonight about the tragic news:

“I had such great hope for him. He was just taking off and to lose his life at such a young age is a tragic loss. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.”

2008 Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations (Film)

Thanks to an interim waiver granted by the WGA, the 14th Annual SAG Awards telecast will air as scheduled on Sunday, January 27.  Since plans for the Golden Globes and the Academy Awards are still up in the air, this could be TNT’s most viewed awards show in quite some time.

This year’s film nominees are:

• George Clooney, Michael Clayton
• Daniel Day-Lewis, There Will Be Blood
• Ryan Gosling, Lars And The Real Girl
• Emile Hirsch, Into The Wild

2008 Golden Globe Nominations (Film)

Assuming the ongoing writers’ strike doesn’t put a wrench into everyone’s plans, the 65th Annual Golden Globes ceremony is scheduled to air on Sunday, Jan. 13th. (The NBC telecast will come just 9 days prior to the Academy Award nominations.)

Here are the most notable omissions/additions in this year’s list of film honorees:

• Atonement led the nominations with seven; Charlie Wilson’s War came in second with five.
• Musicals (Sweeney Todd, Across the Universe, Hairspray) dominated the Comedy/Musical category.
• Cate Blanchett received two acting nominations (Elizabeth: The Golden Age, I’m Not There).
• Philip Seymour Hoffman was also a double-nominee (The Savages, Charlie Wilson’s War)
• Hoffman’s Savages co-star, Laura Linney, was not nominated for her performance.
• The Kite Runner was nominated in the Foreign Film category.
• Javier Bardem was the only actor nominated from No Country for Old Men.
• Into the Wild was left out of all major categories.
