Liam Neeson: The Batman Begins actor has signed on to star with Christina Ricci in a psychological thriller. In After.Life, Ricci - who replaced Kate Bosworth - will play a woman who is caught between life and death. Neeson is slated for the role of the funeral director, a man who mysteriously posseses a “gift of transitioning the dead.” Production on the film begins in November.

Ewan McGregor: The Deception actor is just one of several high-profile stars currently on board for The Men Who Stare at Goats, a movie being co-produced by George Clooney. McGregor plays a reporter who meets a soldier (Clooney) during the Iraq War. Through George, Ewan learns about secret army unit comprised of psychic soldiers. The movie, which is an adaptation of Jon Ronson’s book, also stars features Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges.

Box Office Breakdown: Audiences Raise Their Glasses to Sex and the City

Thanks to a mob of high-heeled women, the big-screen adaptation of Sex and the City took in nearly $57 million over the past three days. Pretty impressive considering the film was expected to land somewhere in the $25-$35 million range. But Carrie and Company did just more than score first place, their hard work put them into the record books:
- Sex and the City had the best opening weekend for an R-rated comedy.
- The film’s debut topped any live-action adaptation of a TV show. (The original Mission Impossible raked in $45 million.)
- SATC‘s premiere surpassed all romantic comedies including Hitch ($43.1 million) and Knocked Up ($30.7 million).
- It was the fifth best showing for any R-rated movie ever.

Box Office Breakdown: Prince Caspian Crowned the Winner

Although it failed to reach expectations, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was still mighty enough to take down Robert Downey Jr. this past weekend. The Disney sequel pulled in over $55 million dollars and earned itself a first place finish. Unfortunately, the film’s gross was slightly disappointing given the first installment’s take; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe opened at $65.6 million back in 2005.
In other adaptation news, Warner Bros.’ Speed Racer continued to fall behind in the race. The colorful adventure slipped another notch into fourth, right behind What Happens in Vegas. Meanwhile, Iron Man‘s $31.8 million total pushed the film past the $200 million range.

Box Office Breakdown: Ashton Kutcher Drives Past Speed Racer

Despite arresting visuals and a $120 million budget, the Wachowski brothers were unable to bring Speed Racer to life. The Warner Bros. movie - which many had already predicted would fall behind Iron Man - did even worse than originally thought. At one point, it was believed the anime adaptation would debut in 2nd place. Unfortunately, the final box office numbers placed the PG film in third.
Meanwhile, What Happens in Vegas became the second wedding-themed entry in the recent Top Ten. The comedy, starring Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher, replaced Made of Honor as the go to ‘chick flick’ of the week. The movie grossed $20.1 million, a slim $1.6 million more than Speed.

Box Office Breakdown: Semi-Pro Scores the Win

What comes up, must eventually come down. That goes for Will Ferrell‘s sports career as well.
Even though Semi-Pro netted this weekend’s #1 spot, the basketball flick earned a measly $15 million. That gross trails far behind 2006’s Talledega Nights ($47 million) and 2007’s Blades of Glory ($33 million). Sadly, Semi‘s debut also takes a backseat to Kicking and Screaming and Bewitched. (In Ferrell’s defense, this movie was the only one of his sports films to be rated R.)

Black Snake a Moan or Triumph?

Though the trailers for Black Snake Moan seem to hint at a dark, sweaty, scuzzy flick featuring a half-naked and emaciated-looking Christina Ricci and a worn out Samuel L. Jackson, reviews hint that the movie is anything but trashy. Ricci plays Rae, a character that’s almost classicly white trash with a bad girl ‘tude and a wardrobe filled with tiny clothes. When her boyfriend Ronnie (Justin Timberlake) leaves for the National Guard, Rae hits the town for a night of hard-core partying. She ends up almost naked and terribly sick, discarded in a ditch by a small farm. The farm’s owner, Lazarus Woods (Samuel L. Jackson) has his own demons to deal with (including a wife who’s just felt him…for his brother) and stumbles across the unconscious Rae. What ensues could have been nothing more than bad movie-making: Lazarus chains Rae to his radiator to keep her from fleeing before she’s well enough to depart, but then decides to keep her chained in order to help her heal her own soul. Aging black man chains half-naked, wasted white girl and holds her hostage? You wouldn’t think Black Snake Moan is a meaningful, evocative tale of friendship and self-love, but that’s exactly what it is. Jackson’s performance is, as expected, powerful, while Ricci shows her empathetic acting talent once again. The movie reigned in three stars from TV Guide, but those sweaty, scuzzy trailers running on TV probably won’t help Moan reach box office success.
