Beleive it or not, younger suburban kids do not make up the majority of “music,” and I know my music tastes have changed a ton since i was a younger teen.  I’m not a big radio fan, but my personal opinion is that rap is not taking over music as a whole.  I’m really not that opinionated in this matter, just trying to say that

1) people should not judge a book by its cover (i.e. rap sucks because lil jon only says 4 words)

2) Music is so many different things to so many different people, so maybe a more accurate question would be “is rap taking over mainstream music?”

btw… reel big fish are great 😊

What you are saying is completely true. When I was 10 I used to go crazy for rap(Hence my whigger days). At about 11 I first started listenin to Linkin Park, and it all went on from there.
The only radio I ever listen to anymore is Krock, the only Rock station here in the New York area.
And I guess like you said, the media is being taken over by Rap. I just wish they’d play some more rock on MTV like Fuse does. For example: The Strokes are an amazing band, but instead of putting them on TV they put some other idiot who screams YEAH all day. On Fuse they always give some new bands a chance to make it out there, ie; The Bravery(did anyone else hear their song: An honest mistake? It’s one of the best I’ve listened to in a while. Fuse was the only channel that gave them a chance. As soon as MTV saw that people liked theym they started playing their song) I guess thats where I was trying to go with this thread.

By the way Reel Big Fish does rock :D And I’m glad we had a mature discussion and we didn’t flame each other. Looking foward to have a difference in opinion with you again. 😊

Right on man, debates are enjoyable (when handled properly)

Ugh rap HAS taken over music. Although kids from all over the world can be seen at my highschool they all listen to rap and pretend they’re black…. 😢 I only listen to rock/metal rap is just pure gayness IMO
“yo yo I slept with your mom and stole 10 cars what?” is not music
Disturbed and Iced Earth are what MTV need to be playing… :D

i actually love rap, but i hate those ppl who think they’re gangster and everything, and they’re just following ppl. Rap music is good, but as long as u dont act as something ur not, then its alrite. As soon as u start acting gangster, then u start to get laughed at.

rap has become more popular, but it has by no means taken over music.  i don’t like most rap, but some of it is pretty good.

You should listen to MC Frontalot (http://www.frontalot.com). Also Mc Hawing (http://www.mchawking.com). That’s some more great nerdcore hip-hop.

Underground hip-hop is cool, but I can’t stand the mainstream stuff.

I don’t believe it has. Only MAINSTREAM it has.

I am a big Dance/EDM fan. I listen to artists I bet 98% of you have NEVER heard, but are like the jessica simpson & ciara of Dance/EDM.

If you go deeper into the scene, explore more genres, you see rap is a piece of lint compared to other styles. You’ll see more people producing their own music and getting on slightly small record labels (they cannot compete with main ones that produce all the Rap & Pop songs) but you WILL see those records in record stores along side your 50 cent EP and your Eminem EP.

90% of those rap singers don’t even make their own beats. They just rap to one some guy did in the little more in depth scene..and probably got like $1000 from the record company for rights to it.

Rap isn’t bad….but I don’t like the mainstream “rap”

I go more in depth into turntablism & such…where people make their own beats/songs from 2 records using 2/3 second samples.

Check the middle where he’s messing with the trumpet part going through octaves and notes with the 35/45 rpm buttons & the pitch fader…giving it a bit of reverb/delay with the upfaders.
