I have a Presario v5000 AMD processor that is about 4 years old. I have been having a problem with Windows XP Pro when it was running. The system would boot and run very slow. After a virus checking I assumed that the OS was corrupted and started a complete recovery. After booting from the Windows XP Setup disk and starting the setup the laptop just shuts down without warning. I have removed numerous devices and get the same effect. I have tried swapping memory cards and removing them with the same effect also. I was only able to get up on XP once in the setup process by using NTFS Quick formatting but during the setup I would get error messages that a few files could not copy then it failed again. I have run the Harddrive diagnostics from BIOS a couple of time and it passed except the last time the laptop shut down in the middle of the test. The shut dows are random in time frame. Sometimes I can get almost all the way through the setup sometimes it is almost immediate. I have replaced the DVD drive with the same results. Any suggestions on what to try next?
