ORLANDO, Fla., Dec 23, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX)—Federal Express has lost a suit brought by a former Orlando employee who said he was harassed by the company for trying to promote minority employees.
A federal jury awarded Theodore Maines, who is white, $1.37 million for emotional pain and another $200,000 for lost wages and benefits, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
The suit said Maines, a senior manager, tried to promote a black and a Hispanic in his department. He said he was overruled, and when he complained he was given the option of accepting a demotion, or receiving a warning letter and termination for any subsequent problems.
He resigned after 20 years with the company shortly after the incident.
“It was very disillusioning to lose my career for doing what I believe was the right thing,’ Maines said. “This is a bittersweet victory.”
FedEx officials said they probably would appeal.
“We strongly believe that FedEx has a diverse work force,” said FedEx spokeswoman Sandra Munoz. “We do not tolerate discrimination.”
