WASHINGTON, Nov 05, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX)—Attorney General John Ashcroft, the White House’s point man in the domestic fight on terror, will resign, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.

Ashcroft’s position as a point man in President Bush’s war on terrorism has made the former U.S. senator from Missouri a lightning rod for groups concerned his policies have encroached on civil liberties, particularly those of detained or accused Muslim immigrants.

His religious commitments also have irritated others concerned about church-state separation.

His aides said Ashcroft, 62, has been worn down by the job. Earlier this year he had to be hospitalized and his gallbladder removed. He is expected to resign by Thanksgiving.

If Ashcroft, an outspoken evangelical Christian who has held regular prayer meetings for Justice Department staffers does leave, observers believe former Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson could replace him. If Bush chose Thompson, who left the administration in 2003, he would become the first African-American attorney general.

Another name being floated is that of Alberto Gonzales, White House counsel. If Bush chose Gonzales, he would become the first Latino in that post. Another possibility is former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.

Other cabinet officers who may leave include Colin Powell, the secretary of state and Donald Rumsfeld the defense secretary.

Well that’s one down. I’m sure they’ll replace him with someone just as fanatical though. Most of the cabinet will probably be replaced with nuts too. It’ll be a sad day when Powell leaves. He was the only voice of reason in the whole damn mess.

I can’t believe they’d put Gulliani in there. If he isn’t a Bush “yes-man” I don’t know who is.

I know.  I don’t even know if I liked him as our mayor.  I kinda did, but that was when I was younger, stupid & didn’t care.

That would be nice. I don’t agree with McCain on a lot of issues but he’s an intelligent and reasonable man. I can only hope they’d put him in there.

Now they’re going to replace him with Alberto Gonzales who’s just as bad as Ashcroft.  Human rights groups have already signaled him as a “bad guy” because he called the Geneva Conventions “quaint.” I thought the point of Ashcroft retiring was to get rid of controversy, not create more.  I guess I was wrong thinking Bush might actually do something not retarded for once.
