I must point out that the PS3 only sold 28,620 in the US and considering the price drop, is not something to shout home about.

It may have sold more than the XBOX 360 but when that gets a price drop, you will see a resergance in sales for that console too.

Yeah, I have to agree with Dave. This argument is really weak Dante. I would HOPE the PS3 would sell more
units immediately after a price drop.  This is nothing shocking. In fact, I would have thought the PS3 would have
sold even more units than it did. Frankly, that 28K number is disappointing.

I have to agree.. if the price was the only thing holding people back from picking up a PS3, why didn’t they triple their normal numbers?

they did not triple their numbers, because they have no games yet (although MGS4 looked freaking amazing).  Why would you go out and buy a $500 PS3 if there are only a few good games out.  I think people are 1. waiting for more good games, and 2. waiting for another price drop.  If the costumer can force a price cut this early in the units life cycle, then they can probably cause the 80 Gig’s price to be cut too.

I don’t care if the PS3 is “winning” or not. I’m just happy to see more PS3’s getting into peoples homes. I plan on getting one at some point and I want to know that it’s A) worth-while for developers to develope for it and that B) there are enough people with PS3’s that online games aren’t dead shortly after they come out. So to me, this is a good thing no matter how you spin it.

Current Sales Figures:

360: 11,623,083 (20 months on sale = 581,154 per month)
PS3: 3, 869,261 (8 months on sale = 483,658 per month)
Wii: 9,107,225 (8 months on sale = 1,138,403)

So, breaking it down by average units per month for the life of the console, the PS3 and 360 are WAY behind the Wii with the 360 selling at 120% of the rate of the PS3.

Thus far:

Wii = teh winnar
360 = Distant 2nd
PS3 = last

how many ps3 will be sold my mgs4 alone..

How many 360s will be sold for this Fall’s lineup alone?

How many Wii’s will be sold by Super Mario Galaxy alone?  (the answer to that is none because Nintendo still can’t keep the damn things on shelves).

Then there is this:
“A Rockstar representative tells GamesRadar that there is no advantage to owning the PS3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV over Xbox 360. He says they are identical games, and then you can almost hear the slap, “But I guess if you want the complete experience with the episodes, then yeah, you should buy the 360, I suppose.”

Wow, the COMPLETE experience for the most popular video game series onthe planet only on 360?  Ouch, I guess $50 million may be a good investment.

Not to be a complete disser on my PS3, I am download the Heavenly sword demo now and the HD video of the MGS4 gameplay.

okay the gta thing is a big blow.. I was hoping it would look better on the ps3.. oh well.

Heavenly sword demo is pretty good but short. It the sort of game I would get stuck on and annoyed so I may just rent it. but mgs4 man that looks boss.

...and we all know how much you love fanboys.

Seriously, though, in any civil (note the qualification) discussion about “winning” the current gen console war, I think you have to define what you mean by “winning” lest the fanboy partisans engage in a perpetual ‘moving the goalposts’ battle where the definition of winning changes at the merest whim.

Frankly, I think each party is going into the ‘war’ with differing goals such that from their respective POVs, all three might be said to ‘win’ depending on how things work out.

Agreed. But also in any discussion about the “winner” of the next-gen console war, one has to consider the question: What is next-gen?

But that’s a whole ‘nother discussion altogether.

Anyhow, while I love you to death DoS et al, I feel it’s my responsiblity to point out to you that WE ARE HARDCORES! Not that it’s a bad thing, but concievably, any of us might consider buying a console simply for one game (like MGS4) or because Final-Heavenly-Vegas-Burnout-Sword-Theft Auto might look a liiiiiiitttle bit better on one console over another.

Or.. we might consider owning two or all three of the compteting consoles. To the tune of, oh, about $1,200.

We need to get some perspective here! The vast majority of the market will NOT be buying two consoles. The vast majority will not buy a $500 or $600 or even a $400 console for a single game simply because they love Master-Snake-Chief-Vercetti. They MIGHT buy two because the Wii is cheap and for the kids and the “other” console is for the grownups.

But even those multi-console homes are relatively rare.

So pissing yourself over a few thousand more sales this week compared to last week or two weeks ago is a waste.

.... Because the market is buying the Wii. And where the market (and the money) is, so shall go the developers. It’s just a matter of time.

Face it friends. Unless something amazing happens, like Sony or Microsoft start sending out hookers to personally deliver those consoles, the next-gen war is essentially over but for the crying. The fat lady may not be singing, but she’s certainly warming up her vocal chords.

damn should I have held out for th hooker delivered console…

Good point, but its fun to rant and rave about who will win..
As long as well all get some cool games I’m happy… even if ps3 will win.

My fear for the Wii is what the mass maket appeal will do for it.  I forsee the churning out of shite titles as fast as crappy developrs can churn them out.

Lots of half assed rushed to market games to appeal to the Wal MArt shopper out there.

Deer hunter 4D for Wii anyone?

The Wii could be good for “videogames” as a whole, but I can see it stagnating innovation.

My thought on the PS3 is that the price reduction (or re-emergence of the original lower price point) is just not enough for mainstream appeal.

Of course, what really moves hardware is software.  So a killer app wouldn’t hurt.

Assuming the PS3 fell below $400, you’re still talking about a lot of money, but I think that’s the high-end sweet spot that Sony must achieve.

Sales will increase as we near the holiday, but I’m thinking the bulk of PS3 sales will occur next year.  I would not be surprised if a further price reduction or bundling options happen later this year or sometime next year.

I see “winning” alot in this thread. PS3 might have overtaken the Xbox360. The fact still remains that the PS3 has seen a “pricecut” or “clearance sale” whichever you prefer, and the 360 has not. If the PS3 did not sell like this at the lower price, it would be considered an enormous failure that people wouldn’t want no matter the price. So I don’t see this as the PS3 winning anything, more following the rules of logic. So its not a failure, and its not winning, because the sales will naturally decrease when the new SKU becomes the only SKU.

And another thing. How is coming in second considered a “win”? The Wii is selling more than double of what the PS3 is (in units)

I hope this wasn’t directed at my comment…. I was just saying that, whether or not you love Sony, if MGS4 is the next big thing for PS3, it’s 8 months away, which is a long time, in my opinion…

Well at the moment sony have good press with the fake price drop.People will be running out to but it for a 100 dollars cheaper.Also the new bundle in europe is still pretty damn good since you get two games and another controller for the price of the it used to be.Also with the mgs footage that might have gotten people to say #### it im getting this now.I will also admit to start saveing for a ps 3 but then decided not to because there are some good games comeing in the months ahead.
