well, i want to make the switch to linux, but i am a bit scared for my meager 40gb HDD running out of space (i will dual boot XP Pro).

where can i find a small and cheap external HDD for less than $50??

i don’t need much… another 40gb would be fine. Actually, is it even possible to boot off of an external HDD?  :?

sincere hardware n00b… (software is my thing 8) )

Check out some of the big online hardware retailers.. I dont know if I can post links here. If youre after 40 gig, I cant imagine you would spend more than 35-45 dollars.

You can only boot from a usb drive if your motherboard supports it. Look in the bios for a USB-HDD boot device option or something along those lines. Manufacturers label the options differently from board to board.

This is not an answer to this question but def a suggestion:
Get a USB/Firewire Enclosure. It uses any internal drive as an exteral. With this you sacrafice nothing. It’s about 50 bucks
