Hey on my site, acousticspot.com i am the admin and am the only user that as of now can access ftp . I recently uploaded a couple of directories, but they are of no use now and i want to delete them. problem is when i go to delete them it says 550 error: permissions denied.

i just want to clean it up and get rid of the directories.. i was able to delete all the files out of the folders and renamed them to 1,2,3,4 ect for easy reconization but i would like to get rid of them.

im usin Dreamhost if that makes any difference. Anyone know how to get it so i can delete the directories?

Thanks

um, i dunno how you access your directories, but i usually use IE just cuz its easy. i punch in teh ftp addy, it asks for my login, then it opens up my ftp, which looks like a windows explorer window. then i just manipulate the files as i would regular files on my computer.

Using IE as FTP, right click on desired directory, choose properties. Place Check marks on all the boxes to the right of Owner. You should be good to go now.

This is been happening to me with DreamHosting and giving the file all the permisions (777) still doesn’t do didly squat. Any other ideas Oscar?

Most of my folders erase fine , when I tried to instlal PHPBB something happened and I had to erase the folders. However the Cache folder would not erase no matter what I did.

ah ... that could be your problem. Maybe there’s a file in there that’s in use since it’s tied directly with your MySQL database. Best bet is to ask for Munky’s help.  Have you guys tried deleting the directories using SSH? Or deleting the sub folders one at a time? That way you can isolate the problem directory.

there might be an invisible file still in the folder which wont allow you to erase it… you should ssh onto your server, check if there is a hidden file, ls -al, if there is delete rmdir and you’re good to go

I asked the people from Dreamhost to erase it. According to the guy who helped me out this happened:
[quote author=“Jeff from Dreamhost”]It looks like you had some hidden ‘.htaccess’ files in those directories, which for some reason your FTP client did not want to delete. I have deleted these directories for you. If you have any other questions or requests, please let us know.

Can you explain into a little more detail? This might happen again and it would be helpful to know this.

since dreamhost servers are running in what i believe to be a unix environment, (maybe linux, not certain, but i know its one or the other), most windows ftp programs do not pick up hidden files, (files that are prepended with a “.”), they will not delete them.

This is the main reason why trying to delete a folder that has hidden items in it will not succeed. When you delete a folder using something like WS_FTP it will find and delete all non-hidden files. And will therefore not delete the folder. In WS_FTP there is an option to show hidden files. Just check your help file for your ftp program of choice on how to activate it.
Hidden files, no way around having them. A lot of them are necessary.

Like I said “ls -al” finds all files in the directory, this is if you telnet into the server.
Delete these hidden files. “rm <filename>”, rm * does not delete hidden files. You have to delete hidden files one by one to be safe.
Now, change your directory “cd ..”
You should be able to delete the directory “rmdir <directory>”

whew….  I’m tired… so much writing
